Confirmed sighting: Comic Relief Dubble bar
Posted: 18:12 Wed 26-02-2003. Price: 45p.
Josh Roulston reports: "I'm not sure if it means it's somehow double-y fair or double-y bar but it's certainly a reasonable amount of quite good chocolate. I don't know how much money is going to comic relief because I was driving while eating it." For the benefit of those not driving while reading this, the Dubble bar is returning to stores in time for Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 3rd-16th March 2003. On an unrelated note, today's Blue Peter introduced an item by saying "The Aztecs are best known for their grisly human sacrifices and for giving us chocolate. But there's more to them than that" - in case viewers thought they enjoyed an idyllic lifestyle of just one ritual execution after another, then spent the rest of their time eating Toffos.

Comment: Just saw this going for 38p in my local Sainbsury's (offical supermarket of Comic Relief etc etc), along with the claim that this is apparently "half price". 76p for a 40g chocolate bar? Here's hoping the "Fair Trade" element is fairer to the producers than it is to the consumer...

Comment: They seem to have these at the UFO (Union Food Outlet - how funny?) on the UEA campus all year round! Never tried one!

Comment: After reading about recent killings in Ivory Coast over cocoa I thought it time to get fair-trade chocolate back on my agenda, so went to Sainsbury's to investigate my options.

The Day Chocolate Company's 'Dubble' bar (37p) is small but dense, in 2 big chunks, and has a rice/chocolate combo along the same lines as a Nestlé Crunch. The chocolate tastes and smells richer though and, being thicker, is very satisfying to chomp through at speed.

Interestingly the ingredients list 'cocoa mass' as separate to 'fairtrade cocoa mass' making the declared fairtrade ingredients a mere 24%. Granted, farmers of sugar and rice may not be shooting each other but fairtrade marks for these foods do exist. At the very least you'd have thought Day Chocolate could get all their cocoa from the same ethical source.

Comment: CO-OP do good Fairtrade chocolate bars, I'm particularly fond of their white chocolate one that is like a twin of Nestle Crunch White. 56137 1 42
