Confirmed sighting: Maryland Cookie Bars
Posted: 12:56 Wed 02-04-2003. Price: 65p pack of 6. Location: Waitrose, N London. Sub-flavours: Choc Chip, Choc Chip 'n' Caramel. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
Snackspot reports: supporting the currently popular theory that anything can now be turned into a biscuit bar - including things which are already biscuits - these are basically big rectangular Maryland Choc Chip Cookies "fully enrobed in Milk Chocolate", as the packet puts it. The "topped with caramel" option is by far the most interesting - both seemed to lack the nuttiness I usually associate with standard Maryland cookies, though maybe I'm thinking of the hazelnut/ coconut ones. This just in: Burton's Foods *will* be doing a Choc Chip & Hazelnut version of their Maryland Giant Cookie (49p each) - phew. Ironically, I was actually out looking for the rumoured onslaught of new McVitie's products - NiceCupOfTeaAndASitDown have a new review of McVitie's "Dead lions and bees" flavour "Lyles Creams", but I have a feeling there's even more on the way than that...

Comment: Actually, that new McVitie's range is going to be called "a:m" and include muffins, cereal bars and - most radically - "bite-sized pieces of cereal in a bag" (info via the printed version of The Grocer magazine: http://www.grocertoday.co.uk/). McVitie's has described the launch as its "biggest this year", and are of course following the trend of providing alternatives to the decline of the traditional breakfast meal occasion.

Comment: Some info about the similar McV chocolate biscuit bars ("individually wrapped in packs of 8 bars, priced GBP0.99"), right at the bottom here: http://www.foodlineweb.co.uk/FoodWeb/newsletter/apr03/product.asp . But don't hold your breath for UK launches of the Bellywashers drinks or "100% Pez Juice".

Comment: Ah-ha! But I have seen the Bellywashers drinks for sale in my local newsagent for the past few weeks now. And not only that, but they're on buy one get one free already. I shall report back soon.

Comment: Matthew - we're still waiting. Especially since they've been awarded Nutrition Action's prestigious "Food Porn" award for May 2003 - http://www.cspinet.org/nah/

Comment: I went back the other day. They no longer had the offer. In fact, they no longer had ANY. Big success, then... *cough* 43678 7
