Confirmed sighting: McVitie's a:m Breakfast Range
Posted: 13:03 Tue 29-04-2003. Price: 99p for six. Location: Sainsburys, Norwich. Sub-flavours: Apple and forest fruits "Morning Slices", plus nut, strawberry, grapefruit and other cereal bars. Nutritional unusualness: Grapefruit? Cereal bar?
"Matthew" reports: On "trial price", and surprisingly nice. There's a rhyme for you. Bought a pack of the apple Morning Slices, and they were very similar to Nutrigrain bars... only nicer. Tasting nowhere near as processed though, and quite fruity. Will buy again. No sign of the elusive cereal bites, muesli fingers or breakfast muffin bars advertised on the back of the packet, sadly. Ah well... You missed out there, Matthew - the Strawberry Cereal Bars, along with the Forest Fruit Morning Slices, are among the highlights of the range, an accolade unlikely to be levelled at the Orange Marmalade Muffin Bars or the just plain "Berry" Cereal Bites. In other McVitie's news, Edinburgh's Taras Young alleges of the M&Ms Chocolate Brownie that the manufacturers "have recently updated the packaging, upped the price and decreased the amount of M&Ms by rather a lot - there used to be around 20-25 per brownie, but now there are about 6 or 7." Watch the shelves, Snackspotters - and, incidentally, don't be taken in by the big boxes for the a:m range either, as the actual bars are often as much as 3.5cm shorter.

Comment: Looking more closely at the ingredients of the Strawberry Cereal Bars, the fruity bits are actually "Strawberry Flavoured Cranberry Pieces". Is it me, or is this food science gone mad?

Also, has anyone tried the cranberry version of the Cadbury's Brunch Bar? If you do, could you check if they've actually got cranberries in them, or whether they're just cranberry-flavoured strawberry pieces instead?

Comment: Hunting around for the ever elusive Frosties Cereal & Milk Bar the other day, I came across the a:m "Nut and Raisin Ceral Bar".

It's nothing special; if anything, it's a little bland, lacking the sweetness you find in others. Makes you bloody thirsty as well.

I'm sticking with my Frosties.

Comment: No accounting for taste... Those orange muffin bars are just gorgeous! Good competition for the "Jaffa Cake" sponge bars. [Although saying that, the proper branded "Caramel" sponge bars will still be taking pride of place in my snack cupboard...]

Comment: I was in London recently and the M&M Brownie I bought at Oxford Circus underground station had the original - large - quota of M&Ms. I wonder if there is some kind of London/Scotland bias going on? (admittedly it was 10p more expensive than I was used to.)

Comment: Has anyone tried something called Mighty Muesli bars....had one the other day that I bought in Devon, absolutely delicious and from reading the label looked as though it had everything you could possibly want in it.
