Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Burger King Splurge "dairy shake"
Posted: 11:00 Mon 16-06-2003. Price: 99p. Location: Burger King, Camden. Sub-flavours: Topped with Starburst Joosters, Twix Twixels, or crunchy M and Ms. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
Snackspot reports: Approx 200ml of ice-cream in this one - about the same as a KFC Avalanche, but less than the (estimated 300ml) McFlurry. The different toppings each come with their own sauces, and the use of crunchy M and Ms (rather than solid chocolate ones) is ingenious - though, weirdly, the ice-cream in the one I had didn't seem to be particularly cold. Also, it appears to be named to rhyme with their current "Got the urge?" TV campaign, which thankfully hasn't gone as far as shortening the restaurant's name to "Burge". McDonald's won't be taking this kind of innovation lying down, however, as "Bernie" - who "works at maccies" - reports that their Strawberry And Cadbury Dream McFlurry may be launched as early as "next week". McD's usually bring in new stuff at the start of each month, but "Bernie" enthusiastically goes on: "Also to come on the new tastes part 3 are the Bacon Cheeseburger, the Tuna Salad, and the Greek Flatbread!"

Comment: Greek Flatbreads (called the Greek Mac) and Tuna Salads are now on sale at Colchester McDonalds. I only went for brekky, so stuck to the trusted bacon-egg mcmuffin and hash brown combo. 'sides, I hate tuna :)

Comment: it's Burger King's attempt to fight back the McFlurry tide. The name is clearly an ill-considered attempt to push the poorly-conceived 'urge' tag line beyond acceptable limits, and the product comes in a pot that looks rewardingly like it had been designed with late 1980s Germany in mind. It's drawn from the milk shake machine, and that - coupled with the vague description as a 'dairy shake' suggests that it's Not Quite Ice Cream. It gets runny awfully fast, too, and yet we're provided with a proper, red plastic spoon to eat it with. The M&Ms one works almost exactly like the American McFlurry version, complete with delicious swirling colour run-off into the ic... *dairy shake*; the twixel one is just wrong; the biscuit fingers are inserted whole, presumably inspired by the cadbury flake; the only problem being, of course, that a crisp biscuit doesn't crumble in the way proper ice-cream insertions (the flake; wafers; those chocolate stick) should.
