Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Rubicon Exotic sparkling cans
Posted: 21:55 Wed 25-06-2003. Price: 55p for 330ml can. Location: Julian Road Stores, Bath. Sub-flavours: Mango, Guava, Lychee, Passionfruit, and Guanabana. Nutritional unusualness: 5% real juice.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Not the still cartoned fruit juice spotted here before, but a line of sugary carbonated beverages in cans. Despite the wide selection, most of them taste pretty much the same, that heavy and slightly sweaty flavour common to many "exotic" fruits, but the Lychee flavour is the standout exception - richly fruity, and sweet without being sickly. I hardly ever drink carbonated stuff any more, but between Vanilla Coke and this, I'm burping all day long again. Not the most up-to-the-minute product report, maybe, but it has been a hot day out there. On a similar note, "Simon" adds his comments on Lucozade Hydro Active, which supposedly has a "refreshing light fruit flavour to encourage you to drink more, so you can keep better hydrated than drinking water alone". "I did end up finishing the bottle and feeling thirsty enough to drink water as well, rather than just alone", Simon confesses, though perhaps we should be grateful Lucozade hasn't gone as far as combining melon, lime, apple and ginseng, as in the French Fanta Greenz.

Comment: This is a joke right? Carbonated rubicon drinks have been available for years - at least four or five. And Lychee?!?! Mango is clearly the stand out flavour!

Comment: Passion fruit is surely the supreme rubicon flavour

Comment: Mango, passion fruit? In what way are these exotic - lychee is the flavour for the discerning multicultural gourmet!

Comment: So far I have disovered that Rubicon fizzy fruit drinks are fruity and refreshing. They consist of real fruit and are free of aspartame. I haven't tried the new guava flavour yet but I have had the mango and the passionfruit flavours, which are both equally nice. I haven't had the chance to try out the other flavours but would if they were readily available.

Comment: Rubicon Mango actually tastes like Fructis shampoo. I have tested this theory.

Comment: Rubicon's official site http://www.rubiconexotic.com/ claims "all Rubicon Exotic Juice Drinks are suitable for those following a Halal diet" - though probably not if you mix them with alcohol...
