Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Banana and Peach Lilt
Posted: 16:36 Thu 17-07-2003. Price: 1.24 for 2 litres. Location: Iceland, Bath. Nutritional unusualness: Contains "Glycerol Esters of Wood Rosins".
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Only myself to blame for this one, really. Having tasted a couple of Aspartame-containing drinks recently which weren't too disgusting, I recklessly went ahead and bought this Unholy-Trinity concoction (Acesulfame-K, Aspartame AND Saccharin) anyway, and regretted it sincerely within seconds. It's absolutely revolting, tasting of about 4% banana, 0% peach and 96% dirty radioactive metal. What the Hell happened to fizzy fruit drinks with good old-fashioned God's own natural freaking SUGAR in them? IF I WANT THE FREAKING DIET VERSION I'LL BUY THE FREAKING DIET VERSION, YOU FREAKING TOSSWIPES [report prematurely terminated to avoid possible offence]. Great sighting Stu - treat yourself to an anger-management session and a quiet lie-down. Not many other new sodas in the UK's effervescent pipeline at the moment, so I'll just mention that, compared to both Tropical Sprite Remix and caffeinated green dnL, I much preferred the unique "orange with a mild blackberry aftertaste" of the USA's Mountain Dew Livewire (also available in "Slushee" form).

Comment: i just bought this and it does indeed taste of 4% banana and 96% misc. 'crush' taste that seems to be a generic lilt thing. it's also got that cross between new crunchy-nut cornflakes supermarket brand logo and the new(ish) comet orange on black superstore logo. maybe a bit like a yogurt advert from the 80s/early-90s.

anyway, i've put it in the fridge and i'm going to give it another try and see if it gives me brain cancer with all the delicous aspartame. contains a source of phenylalanine? at least i'm getting my phenylalanine straight from the source!

Comment: Calm it Bob, it's only a snack site!

anyway, I'm surprised no-ones mentioned the recent new label designs on lots of products.

Lilt, Starburst, Cherry Cola(now apparently part of the Coca Cola family officialy, instead of being called Coke), Wine Gums(to match with sours?)

Comment: I also saw that in Sainsbury's!

Maybe it's leading the way to a purple World Tour flavour....

Comment: I'm with Stuart on this one.. it's an abomination. I was expecting a refreshingly different banana drink (hey, it could have worked out), but in the end it reminded me of Mango & Mandarin Lilt with 1 drop of 'banana flavouring' and a kilo of aspartame.

Bloody awful.

Comment: I have tried the new Lilt 'Banana & peach'. It doesn't taste as good as it should, since it contains artificial sweeteners(aspartame). I don't know why they have to add sweeteners to 'non-diet' drinks anyway. It spoils them. If people would rather have sweeteners in their drinks, then they can go ahead and do so. That's what diet drinks are for, so there is no need to chuck sweeteners into the non-diet drinks.

Comment: Another thing I have to point out is the fact that Mango & Mandarin Lilt is hard to get hold of. I know that the packaging has changed, so do they still do it? If there is a Lilt Fruit Crush Mango & Mandarin Lilt, please can you show me the new style container and tell me whether aspartame has been chucked into the concoction. Email me at richardv@dsl.pipex.com and I will be satisfied and willing to but it still.

Comment: Having always rated the original lilt (not the diet version) as my top aeriated drink, I felt justified in assuming that banana/peach would be more of the same. How wrong can you get! It might be better if it tasted either of banana or peach, or preferably both, but it would have been hard fo Coca-Cola to come up with a more disagreeable concoction. Do they never learn?
