Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: McDonald's Greek Mac
Posted: 15:50 Wed 23-07-2003. Price: 3.69 in regular meal deal. Location: McDonald's, London. Nutritional unusualness: 75% less sugar than UK "Big Mac".
Snackspot reports: Clearly just the tip of the iceberg (lettuce) compared to some of the "New Taste" madness inflicted on the Australians, this claims to feature "a special blend of beef, onions and herbs served with tomato, lettuce and a yoghurt and cucumber sauce". And it tastes - like a Big Mac in a Nan bread sandwich. Not objectionable but not quite the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" tie-in the world was possibly expecting.

...In other fast-food news: Satan's own restaurants are reported to be introducing queue-busting wireless order-takers "by the end of the year"; KFC are advertising their own equivalent of the New Tastes menu; and kudos to Snackspot reader Kevin Cecil, for this harrowing image of an official McDonald's child's "Bib and Bonnet" set he purchased in a 99p store in North London, adding "They also had one of Mayor McCheese".

Comment: As with the mexican-style burger, the greek mac has an instability problem - sat in the holloway road macdonalds the other week I chuckled watching a man bite into his and losing half of it as it slowly slopped out onto the floor, only to have the exact same thing happen to me.

Are rumours that the yoghurt and berry crunch will return permanently to the menu true? Don't know where I read it (Im increasingly suspicious that it might have been a dream), but please god let it be true.

Comment: The two standard shape burgers in papery naan provide a highly satirical deconstructionist essay of late night greek-food consumption; even the sour cream/yogurt stuff looks and tastes a little like it could be art supply glue.

Comment: The yoghurt and berry crunch/ "fruit parfait" appears to be a permanent menu item in the US and I see no technical reason why it shouldn't be over here. (Though in America, the museli element comes in its own separate foil-wrapped section, to keep it crunchier?)

Comment: The instability problem of the Greek Mac would add to the authenticity of the experience: the Greek Mac is clearly an attempt to emulate the famous souvlaki (aka kebab, gyro), which is of course notorious for covering the eater's leg in garlic sauce and lamb grease. Shame they didn't use lamb though..

Here in Oz Red Rooster are promoting a Chicken Souvlaki wrap (no link unfortunately - the Red Rooster site is nothing but slow-loading Flash). Oh OK - http://www.redrooster.com.au

Comment: Tried the Greek Mac its okay actually, a little more grown up tasting. No sloppy greasyness. But now I am afraid to go back after hearing reports that McD's can use worms to beef up their burgers!! 82165 5 45
