Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Captain Cook's Chip Cones
Posted: 13:33 Wed 30-07-2003. Price: 13p, 25g bag. Location: Co-op, Bath. Nutritional unusualness: They're BAKED NOT FRIED.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Proudly emblazoned on the front of these biscuity-type wheat and potato snacks is the legend "Captain Cook travels the world in search of exotic flavours for his delicious baked potato snacks", and he's certainly pulled out the stops for the first in the line - Cheese'n'Onion Flavour. Then again, it says on the back that the good Captain has brought his snacks from the "four corners of the world" (Cap'n! Have you heard the news?), but immediately underneath, his address is given as Middlesborough. Also, despite being called "Chip Cones", they're nothing to do with chips and they're not conical. (They're the rounded-triangle shape of the similar snacks usually found on supermarket own-brand labels in plain salted flavours.) Disgraceful misrepresentation aside, though, they're pretty good, with a sharp taste enhanced by black pepper. Bargain price, too.

...With the news that KP will be reducing the pack size of Hula Hoops Shoks to 39p for 40g (from 47p for 55g), Snackspot wholeheartedly supports the inventiveness of the UK's native snack-producers, in the face of yet another onslaught from Walkers, rumoured to be launching Sensations Nut Clusters in September, in varieties Chilli Spice, Cool Tomato Salsa, and Cream and Onion.

Comment: Isn't the 'Captain Cook' concept just a direct rip off of the Phineas Fogg idea? Are those snacks still available?

Comment: Cheers Alex, I'd also heard something along those lines - can't wait to see them.

Also, I hereby encourage all readers to address me as "Snackspot" (or "Mr Snackspot", even), like "Gamesmaster" used to be referred to on the TV.

Comment: Tescos Pembury (Tunbridge Wells)

Tubbed snacks are always a good sign in my experience - but these disappointed. Although crunchiness was 10/10, the Spicy Tomato Salsa falvour was very thin on the ground - hardly there, in fact. £2.99 is a bit steep, but after threee mini snacking sessions in front of The Simpsons on Tuesday night, there's still half the tub left - so that can't be bad.
