Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Del Monte Orange Fruit Ice
Posted: 12:19 Wed 06-08-2003. Price: 2 for 4. Location: Iceland, Bath. Sub-flavours: Pineapple and Coconut, Mango and Passion Fruit, Kiwi and Papaya. Nutritional unusualness: "Produced in a factory which handles nuts." Missus.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: The juice man from Del Monte, he say "Blimey, that's a bit rich". Made with 70% orange juice (from concentrate) this lolly is so intensely sweet and orangey that it's like drinking frozen neat Kia-Ora.The juice-to-water ratio is so high that even after a month in my freezer it's still not quite frozen solid, with a consistency somewhere between a normal lolly and a Slush Puppie, that barely manages to hold together while you eat it. Not many things are either too sweet or too fruity for me, but this is - the average 10-year-old would probably go nuts for it, though, so the "premium" styling may be an error.

...Top marks to Stu for attempting to diagnose this product's highly distinctive texture, a feature not shared by the others in the range, including the Kiwi and Papaya reviewed previously. Sadly, neither seem likely to mollify "El_pollo_diablo", who rages: My girlfriend and I were more than dismayed to learn last night that Ben and Jerry's Peach Ice Cream, which was nothing short of amazing, has now been discontinued. Or so says the manager of UCI Surrey Quays Cinema near Canary Wharf, London. As fans will know, this was one of the greats - a subversively authentic fruit ice cream with precisely zero sorbet overtones. It was a treat that made even Tomb Raider a successful cinematic excursion. NB - They still sell Orange flavour though, and it STILL tastes like Calpol.

Comment: Has anyone got a link to the pic of the otter eating an ice lolly that was deemed so hilarious this morning on Radio 1?

Comment: No, it sounded like a different one ;)

Seriously, thanks for the ultrafast response Neil! BBC London News were just saying that the zoo have been giving their tigers lollies made of frozen blood, which - if they prove popular - may soon be more widely available at your local Sainsbury:

HIV test after boy eats lolly

A 10-year-old boy has had an HIV test after eating an iced lolly which contained a thick red substance. He has also had the first of three hepatitis injections and been told he needs blood tests in a year's time.

The boy's mother believes the cola-flavoured lolly, from Sainsbury's supermarket, contained blood.

Comment: Blood Lolly latest (found by searching Google News for http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&edition=us&q=blood+lolly )

Rachel Allen, a spokeswoman for the supermarket chain, said the matter was being taken very seriously, but that it may be difficult because the ice lolly had melted and the wrapper had been thrown away.

She added: "The usual procedure is to analyse any product when there is a complaint but unfortunately this did not happen in this case."

She said the company believed the red substance was not blood.

"We have investigated the matter with our supplier who has advised that, due to the production process and the strict safety regulations, it is highly likely that the substance is a concentrated red syrup that is used in the production of other ice cream products," she said.

Comment: Yeah thanks, I'm working through a bit of a backlog at the moment but it's on the list. Without giving too much away, is it a new kind of root beer or are you mainly drawing attention to the UK versions available?

Comment: I stumbled upon Carter's by chance on a rare trip to Asda. It's nicer than Sainsbury's (especially the new recipe), but still doesn't have a patch on the proper American stuff. They should just import A&W or Mug. 43293 5 5
