Click pic to view comments Friday face-off: Coke vs Pepsi
Posted: 11:38 Fri 15-08-2003. Price: 89p. Location: Bells Mini Mart, Hemel Hempstead. Sub-flavours: Original, Code Red. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
In the wake of barely controlled excitement like this from "Michael Fossey" - "I went by a local store the other day and Mountain Dew was being sold there, there was about 10 of each flavour in a bottle, no cans" - it seems appropriate that this week's debate should address that age-old philosophical conundrum: Which company's products do you most prefer - Coke or Pepsi? (pic shows Pepsi's Mountain Dew Live Wire, believed indigenous to the mainland US. Incidentally, last week's Drink vs Ice-Cream dispute came down heavily in favour of liquid refreshments, with around 8 positive comments for them vs 2 for ice-creams, and another 10 or so rambling on about straws and ice-pops and things).

...So: dare you take the Pepsi Challenge? Are you one of those people who thinks that one of them is based on lemon flavourings, and one is based on orange, but can never remember which? Do you have a mysterious preference for the spinoffs of either Coca-Cola (Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Mr Pibb etc) or Pepsi (Pepsi Blue, Pepsi Twist, Pepsi Vanilla, 7Up, 7Up Tropical Splash, Sierra Mist, Mountain Dew)? And does that loyalty also draw you to other PepsiCo companies, like Pizza Hut, Walker's Crisps and KFC? Then the comments section would like to hear from you...

Comment: I think Coke is sweeter, but Pepsi is fruitier, so it depends what sort of mood I'm in.

Incidentally, according to the claims of this - truly astonishing - website, both are equally keen on using ultra-obscure "subliminal imagery" in their packaging: http://www.subliminalworld.com/COKE.HTM

Comment: Vanilla Coke all the way, although the flavour does vary considerably by country. A personal preferance for the American 'more-like-cream-soda' flavour. The only problem with the holy liquid is that it's difficult to find in the packaging sweet spot of 6 multipack wrapped cans.

Comment: Even though Pepsi tastes nicer, Coke wins hands down on the refreshment stakes. Somehow, even though the packaging is red, it is cooling. Can't explain it. Oh dear, I seem to have mixed up this week and last week's discussion.

On other products, then Pepsi have to win because Coke is responsible for the disgusting vileness that is Powerade!

Comment: can I be awkward? Pepsi is the better cola straight; but diet coke is the better option for diet drinks. And as I prefer the lo-sugar lightness, I'd have to come down on the side of Coke.

However, as everyone knows, the best cola by far is Ben Shaw's Suncharm. Light but with proper sugar in, it won't clog your throat, or rot your brain cells.

Comment: just realised that Lilt is made by Coca-Cola in the UK, but you never seem to see it elsewhere?

incidentally, neither company currently very popular in India: http://www.oneworld.net/article/view/66084/1/

NEW DELHI, August 15 (OneWorld) - An Indian consumer rights body Friday threatened to take soft-drink giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to a consumer court if the multi-national corporations (MNCs) failed to answer queries about safety levels in their products.

The Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS), one of the leading consumer rights groups in India, has urged Pepsi and Coke to answer consumer queries regarding allegations that their popular drinks contain pesticides.

The CUTS statement follows a report last week by an Indian non-governmental organization (NGO), the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), that said the companies' beverages - including Coca-Cola and Pepsi - had high levels of pesticide residues. The companies have rejected the report as "incorrect and baseless."

Although I do have fond memories of Cherry 7up and whatever happened to Tab Clear (coke product I believe)? Can I dare to ask does anyone actually prefer neither (i.e. supermarket/virgin brands)?

Vanilla Coke in cans doesn't taste special, but in a bottle it is, argueably the best drink out there.

Comment: Just to answer JT's questions (currently scattered throughout the site), Jolt Cola has long been available in the UK, usually from those Budgens stores that used to be 7-11s, plus some of the more exotic convenience chains, like Londis and Europa.

It is of course also available from Cybercandy: http://www.cybercandy.co.uk/aaaasmt/[TRUNCATED]

along with 7up Tropical Splash, Pepsi Blue, Welches Grape Soda and the US version of Vanilla Coke, described as "sooo much different to the stuff here in the UK, even there detail on the can is better....the UK vanila coke is nice...but if you love that grab a Vanilla coke can, thats from Coca-cola's homeland USA"

Apart from having seen it so many times, that if I see it once more I'll be climbing a water tower with a rifle in hand, it now makes no sense. Comment: I remember a comment in 'American Psycho' that stated the Pepsi was chemically a much better mixer than Coke (i think it was something to do with the sodium content). Was that made up or does someone actually know the differing chemical contents? I do much prefer Pepsi but it's not to do with saltiness. I don't like the rough caffiene taste of Coke which always makes me feel far more thirsty than before I drank it.

Comment: I'm amazed by the number of pro diet drinks comments - both Coke and Pepsi are clearly far better than the chemical abominations that are the diet versions (and the less said about Pepsi Max the better). At the risk of being controversial I would suggest that the remarks of anyone who likes the taste of aspartame be stricken from the record, as they clearly don't know what they're talking about.

Comment: I've just seen Cherry 7up in Canary Wharf's own newsagent chain "News on the Wharf" along with "New!" McCoy's Spice Sizzling Beef. And I got a sample pack of "Xstals", an extremely dubious looking "energy sweet" (hexagonal half-blue-half-pink pill with an X carved into each side).

Comment: That page claims that 25 Xstals equals one cup of strong coffee - the free sample pack contained just four! My body is now coursing with the energy provided by a whole sixth of a cup of coffee as well as "trehalose"... I've ripped the packet through the logo (as the notched-edge design dictates) but I'll see what I can do. The back says "Made in Switzerland for Confunctionery BV". Functional confectionery... I see what they did there.

Comment: From the Xstals FAQ:

How many do I need to eat before I feel any effect?

Depends on the individual, but we reckon about 5-6 sweets.

So does this get the award for most pointless product sample ever? It's not as if they taste particularly nice.

Then again, in places where you get to pour your own soda (UK branches of subway, for instance), I often like to mix the Sprite and Fanta options, producing a hybrid that I imagine you'd describe as "Spanta"?

Comment: I have recently returned from living in New Zealand. I am a huge consumer of both Diet Coke & Diet Pepsi. This I know is a real no-no in the States as it's 'one or the other' over there. Anyway back to this tale. The NZ Diet Coke in cans is by far the biggest seller (Pepsi ia quite rare). However it is very poor. Imagine a UK can of Diet Coke left open for an hour and then topped-up with tap water! So when I saw the far nicer Diet Pepsi, I had to bulk buy. Wouldn't be so bad if both products weren't a lot more expensive over there. US versions are even better and even cheaper! What I'm trying to say -in this roundabout way - is why are such multi-national brands so different around the world? And don't get me started on French Coke 'Light'!

Comment: Coke is bad. It contains lots of poison. Pepsi is good. It contains no Poison. Coke make you sick, Pepesi is the cure for that awful trick. Coke is so bad, it gives ya herpes. I had them because of coke, but then i drank pepsi and they went away. Coke is made by the devil, and hes quite off the level. Pepsi is made by god, drinking is just as holy as going to chruch.

Comment: It depends what you actually mean by 'outgrown'. In what country? Via what calculation?

Certainly, at the cash and carry I work at, Coke outsells Pepsi quite considerably - about four times as much.

On the other hand, the amount of J20 Britvic sells is ridiculous. Not as much as Coke, certainly - but I suspect it has a far higher profit margin.
