Click pic to view comments International sighting: Nestle Fruity Smarties mit dem Haribo Goldbarenkern
Posted: 12:42 Wed 20-08-2003. Price: Approx 1 euro or so. Location: Graz airport, Austria. Nutritional unusualness: It's a gold Haribo bear - in a Smartie!.
"Dan Pearce" reports: Suprisingly tasty sweet with each colour Smartie being represented by a different fruit (red=strawberry etc). Unfortunately the gum is not bear shaped, which would have been fun.

...It's the Harry Potter Chewy Dragon Foetus Egg you can enjoy at any time of the year! (Plus a slightly bizarre tie-in between what I thought were two quite different confectionery companies.) Not much other jelly-related news at the moment, though Asian food specialists Natco (site requires Flash, sorry) are stepping up the promotion for their exciting new range of "Jelees" Fruit Jelly products, available in orange, apple, strawberry, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, peach and lychee. Their trade ad reassuringly boasts "40% profit margin! It's enough to turn your knees to jelly", and "Safe For Kids - No Konjac", in the wake of news stories like Jury awards $16.6 million to parents of girl who died after choking on gel candy.

"7UP revives Fido Dido"

Comment: That's ridiculous - nothing can revive Fido Dido given that the concept was stillborn the day it left the marketing dept...

Comment: Surely these new Smarties will just be Tooty Frootys (or however they are mis-spelled) in different shaped and coloured shells?

Comment: I'd always assumed that the Austrian Fruity Smarties (above) had some chocolate element, but further research implies this isn't the case. I know I'm going out on a limb here but I reckon they (and therefore the UK ones) are more like Gummi Bears with a traditional hard Smartie sugar/ carnuba wax coating?

Comment: re: Fido Dido - maybe he's going to be re-animated zombie-style, perhaps via an infusion of 7-Up under its original name of "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda": http://www.sodamuseum.bigstep.com/generic.jhtml?pid=4 59642 5 27
