Friday face-off: Once a day vs More often
Posted: 12:28 Fri 22-08-2003.
Snackspot
concludes: despite many marvellously well-argued submissions, I'm forced to declare last week's Coke vs Pepsi debate a draw, as many voters found it impossible not to express preferences for (say) diet versions of one drink and normal versions of the other. Anyway, this week's topic should, in its own way, be just as controversial: now that Snackspot's been running for 6 months or so, is there anything you'd like to see changed? And in particular: Are you satisfied with only one snack sighting per day, or do you desperately hunger for more?
...To be honest, I've got quite into the habit of posting one sighting per day, though this does mean they might not appear on the site until a few days after you've submitted them. Plus, there are other general improvements I'd like to make (an RSS comments feed, a "Where to buy stuff" FAQ, an email address so you can submit via mobile phone). Still: do you think Snackspot should be updated more often, "when circumstances warrant", like the Drudge Report? Do you feel that the strict "must send photo" submission criterion is unfairly biased against people who don't seem to own a scanner or a camera? Or do you secretly suspect that I should give in to public pressure and turn every thread into a discussion of
how delicious we imagine Pepsi Blue to be and when oh when will they launch it in the UK?

(NB: NO IDENTITIES ARE VERIFIED; ANYONE COULD ACTUALLY BE FROM THE MANUFACTURERS
OR COMPETING COMPANIES. ALL CELEBRITY POSTINGS ARE IMPERSONATED ... POORLY)

Comment: I'd like it to be something like 3 sightings each day.
I'm not sure why, but I think it may get more interest, as sometimes the site can go a bit slow on postings.
Still a top site mind you.
Sizzling Beef McCoys are out by the way;)

If you couldn't find the time, I could help somehow. And I think the Pepsi Blue topic has worn a bit thin now!

Comment: About the camera issue- I don't submit pictures, but you find one anyway, so I don't think it's an issue.
The only addition I'd make is an option to edit your posts, or, if not possible, don't have a limit between post times on one topic

Comment: actually, people not sending photos is one of the main reason sightings get delayed. in fact, I might try doing a couple of sightings a day until I start running out of ideas.
the time limit between posting on the same topic seems to stop people accidentally posting the same thing twice, but editing old comments would require some sort of user registration (I also like the breezily spontaneous nature of a lot of the contributions...)

Comment: Ah but if I let you have sightings without pictures how do I know you've actually seen the product in the shops and not just read about it on a website somewhere?
(Also, what do I illustrate that sighting with? An "artist's impression"?)
You could scan in a shop receipt I suppose but it wouldn't really be the same...

Comment: As someone who reads this site at least one a day (but who's never been arsed to post anything before), I vote for at least 2 sighting a day. You have to keep the pictures though - artist's impressions only allowed if they are really, really funny...
Oh, and I've never tasted Pepsi Blue or Mountain Dew... Am I the only one?!

Comment: Just on the subject of Pepsi Blue - It is out here in Canada and it is repellant. The supposed "berry cola fusion" tastes foul and reminisent of cheap 'Happy Shopper' fizzy pop. Don't waste any more time wanting the drink. Really.

I've not had that new Lilt, American Vanilla Coke, Mountain Livewire, Dr.Pepper Code Red, dnL, Sprite Ice, Sprite Remix, Pepsi Cherry or Blue.
For the pictures, couldn't you send one from the 'net?

Comment: doh, i knew this would happen ;)
One more question: Do a lot of people read the site on Saturdays? Is it worth posting new sightings then?
(Oh and i'll eventually stick this in the FAQ, but: pics from other websites aren't as good because a) it's less convincing that you've actually tried the product, b) it's their copyright, and c) it makes it harder to tell when other sites then start using our pictures - eg http://www.foodlineweb.co.uk/FoodWeb/newsletter/aug03/product.asp which, hilariously, appears to have "borrowed" a digi photo i took of a walkers print ad...)

Comment: I feel that sightings should be posted as soon as possible, creating an up-to-the-minute new food-and-drink site. As for no-picture sightings, they should be accepted, but not given the same clout as a picture sighting. Call them "Unconfirmed sightings".

Comment: I hate to break it to you, but Pepsi Blue is so vile, there are almost no words to describe it. Imagine taking a really, really sugary boiled sweet of weak and ambigious flavor, melting it and then adding more sugar syrup and a bit of soda water and thats pepsi blue. However, this is just my opinion. If any of you are REALLY desperate to try the stuff, I can ship you some of it. Anyone who is interested can email me: genericmember(AT)aol(dot)com and we can work something out.

Comment: I think one a day is plenty - don't burn up all the material too soon. And as soon as any discussion starts to talk about Pepsi Blue, you should close the thread. Except that would mean there would only ever be two or three comments for each sighting. So that's probably a bad idea. I think the requirement for submitting a photo with each sighting is good. And I've had Pepsi Blue, and it was awful, and I don't think Pepsi sell it here anymore (Aust.).
Also, could you do the Snackspot Face-off on Friday? I never get to see it until Monday, and I want to have the chance to say "First toast"...

Hey, if they sell Pepsi Blue in France maybe you could organise a "booze cruise" - though you'd have to convince customs that all that blue drink is for your "personal use", of course
For more info than you could possibly require about the drink (including astonishing claims that it may "turn your stools blue"):
