Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: KFC Warm Chicken Salad/ Popcorn Chicken Shaker
Posted: 23:20 Sun 24-08-2003. Price: 2.99/ 1.99. Location: KFC, London. Sub-flavours: Salad with Honey and Mustard, Caesar or Low Fat Vinaigrette dressing; Shaker with Tomato Ketchup or BBQ Sprinkle. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
Snackspot reports: OK, just to tidy up a couple of belated Bank Holiday sightings - the warm salad is clearly KFC's version of McDonald's (US) New Premium Salads (though they have a choice of "Crispy" or "Grilled" chicken over there) and, as "Diarmuid Mallon" has previously pointed out, comes in a sophisticated Pret-a-Manger-style brown-paper gift bag. The Popcorn Chicken Shaker is one of the most complex self-assembly meals I've ever seen, and involves transferring hot chicken popcorn pieces out of their box into a paper cup with a transparent lid (the "shaker"), then adding the same sorts of spicy powder that Burger King encouraged you to shake into your fries last year. You can still use any leftovers on your chips, though.

...In other finger-lickin' info: vegetarian Def Jam founder Russell Simmons has called for a boycott of KFC in the US, accusing them of cruelty to chickens - though regular Snackspot readers will recall Simmons is also currently promoting his new energy drink and has had previous disagreements with KFC parent company PepsiCo. Incidentally, while purchasing a Popcorn Chicken Shaker during the recent hot spell, I was pleased to see a homeless man request, and swiftly receive, a cup of iced water from the counter staff - a reassuring sign of KFC facing up to its social responsibilities, plus a useful tip for all of Snackspot's homeless readers out there.

Comment: The KFC in Glasgow Union Street (which, on an unrelated aside, is surely the filthiest KFC in Britain, with every single surface giving the impression of being coated in 20 years worth of chicken fat and cigarette smoke (probably because they actually are). With the 1970's digital alarm clock-style, glowing red, seven-segment display tills adding a further touch of class. But anyway.) appeared to have run out of the the various Chicken Shaker paraphernalia when I dropped by on the way home from work on Thursday.

As such, the famed resourcefulness of KFC staff came into play (that is, after the person serving me had engaged in a 5 minute debate with the corpulent neighbouring till operator (who was clad in a enormous green t-shirt pulled taut across his gigantic gut, with the word "SALAD" stretched out of shape upon it - presumably an attempt by the KFC people to introduce irony into the fast food arena)) and an alternative was provided by, er, chucking my chicken in a Pepsi cup.

Presentation aside, as far as taste goes, it's Popcorn Chicken obviously (i.e. fairly unsatisfying, too small chicken nugget things, which taste like they've had the "rusk" and "water" content pushed past the actual percentage of chicken) with some horrible 10p-bag-of-crisps style barbecue flavouring adhering to it. And your fingers afterwards. And everything else you come into contact with until you scour your hands.

Another triumph from the Colonel then.

Comment: Still, you've got to admire their ingenuity for reusing their limited container repertoire. It's like they have to run every restaurant with a limited selection of lego pieces or something

Comment: Just a dull factual correction: Pepsi don't own KFC any more.

Comment: Yeah, good point - Pepsi official history states: "KFC [was] spun off along with Pizza Hut and Taco Bell businesses as Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc. [now Yum Brands?] in 1997." - http://www.pepsico.com/company/history.shtml

- Pepsi products still the weapon of choice in all the Pizza Huts and KFCs I've ever been to though...
