Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Kellogg's Screamin' Fruit Squidgers
Posted: 19:45 Mon 25-08-2003. Price: 54p. Location: Asda, Lower Earley, Reading. Sub-flavours: Apple, Blackcurrant and Strawberry. Nutritional unusualness: OVER 90% FRUIT.... (and fruit juice).
"Diarmuid Mallon" reports: When I got to the checkout I spotted the display stands for these "crushed fruit snacks". At the front of every alternate checkout lane there was a three layer display box, one layer for each flavour. Our lane only had Apple, so I made a mad rush up and down the store, and managed to get the last Blackcurrant pouch - no luck with the Strawberry. Each Squidger is a small pouch (not unlike the pouch that the "sports" Ribena comes in) containing "over 90% fruit" and in rather small writing - "and juice". The pouch recommends that you chill, for "the coolest taste sensation around" - so I did and saved both pouches for a mid morning snack the next day. The contents don't so much "squidge" out, as gloop, and resemble Bostik glue. The Apple flavour was slightly artificial and tasted more of apple skin that the fruit with more than a hint of Bostik. The Blackcurrant tasted much like the apple with a hint of tart blackcurrant flavour. This is no real surprise as the ingredients listed show that the 82% of the 91% fruit is not blackcurrant, but apple and strawberry! I can't see that I'll be buying these again, although they did finally stop the Frijj Do'h-nut milkshake from repeating on me!

...Another "golden oldie" sighting of a product previously described in these pages as "like puting [sic] a spoon full of strawberry jam in your mouth" (and still not to be confused with the Kellogg Screamin' Fruit Spurters due any day now). View the comments for the full story of Diarmuid's epic encounter with the Strawberry flavour...

Comment: Safeway, Basingstoke Rd, Reading: Follow up to my other sighting. After the disappointment of Asda being sold out of the Strawberry flavour, my heart skip a beat when I saw this - a minor medical condition - nothing to worry about. Anyway, back at the ranch or rather after 24 hours chilling I opened the pack. Hmm.. tastes much like the apple/bostik flavour that the other two flavours tasted of. The ingredients include Aronia Juice, which google tells me is also know as the Black Chokeberry - http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0304121852daa . Strangely they opted to use the latin name.

Comment: I don't think Chokeberry is an appealing name...

Comment: Just had the Blackcurrant.

Tastes like liquid winders to me. I couldn't eat/drink/squirt it in one

Comment: Just had the Strawberry.

From the description it sounded like jam. And oh my god, it's the foulest, cheapest, nastiest Jam I've ever tasted. But yes, now that you mention it, Jam crossed with Bostik glue.

Comment: Okay, sent an email to Kelloggs, and they wrote back to confirm that, due to lack of customers, they have stopped making Squidgers :(

Comment: it's a sad world where the only way children experience fruit is via sugary liquid gloop in foil packets.

Comment: Lucy, how right you are......

Luckily, with some gentle persuading my son will eat fruit, but for his lunchbox this was a good thing.
