Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Virgin Vanilla Cola/ Carters Refreshing Root Beer
Posted: 18:08 Wed 27-08-2003. Price: 1.29/2 litres (but buy one, get one free)/ 1.19 for 6 cans. Location: Iceland, Bath/ Asda, Surrey. Nutritional unusualness: (Virgin Vanilla Cola) All-sugar sweetening.
At the risk of re-igniting one of our most popular discussions of all time, "Stuart Campbell" reports: [Virgin Vanilla Cola] has a much more in-your-face (hey, quite literally) vanilla content than the Coke version and a slightly furry aftertaste, but while noticeably different, it's just as nice. I'd say "try both and decide which you prefer", but you don't need me to tell you that, man.

...And if you thought Stuart was direct and to the point, check out this contribution from the (normally verbose) "JT", here terser than a Victorian telegram: Carters Refreshing Root Beer. Carbonated Fruit Flavour Soft Drink with Sugar and Sweetener. Comes in a pack of 6x 330ml cans for only 1.19p, to tell you the truth it tastes like watered down Germolene. In other sparkling witticisms: Britvic appear to be seriously claiming that the renaming of Freekee to "Tango Strange" Soda is due to a "legal challenge", though a recent issue of The Grocer was more inclined to blame "awful" early sales for both this and their price cut from 62p to around 49p/ bottle. Bevnet has a positive review of Pepsi Vanilla US, and Lucozade have ditched outdated figurehead Lara Croft in favour of a September ad campaign featuring their new flavour Citrus Clear.

Comment: Oh yes Asda Lemon and Lime Coke - how could I have been such a fool??

seriously Alex - you (or one of your fellow Asda fans) are going to have to get access to some sort of camera. (Asda don't seem to have many supermarkets in the London area...)

Comment: God I love root beer. Its the germaline flavour that does it. Has anyone noticed that root beer, coal tar soap and Laphroaig whisky seem to belong to the same food group?

Comment: On the subject of root beer, I cant believe such a great tasting drink is not imported to UK mainstream shops, as many have said, it kicks bottom over most soft drinks we have here, I bet the yanks are pissing themselves laughing at us!! They could be laughing all the way to the bank if A&W export to us and same goes for whoever would choose to buy it (clearly there is a huge demand for it, as seen on cybercandy, american soda and many other websites that buy it in to sell it over here!). Come on get your fingers out ya anuses England!!

Comment: wayne: you can also just add 'deep heat' to your coke in the meantime. it's a lot cheaper than buying from the import shops.
