Snackspot reports: A fantastic range of opinions expressed during last week's debate Should Snackspot be updated once a day or more often?, with people who visit the site a lot wanting more regular sightings, and people who don't not really minding so much. People who send in picture-less sightings thought that this should be allowed (or encouraged), while others disagreed, so no big surprises there. Anyway, I've had a stab at doing 2 sightings per day this week, which has kind of worked, though it might slip back to 1 per day plus occasional bonus ones in the future. But the RSS comments feed is definitely up and running now - tuck in!

...Which brings us to this week's topic - inspired by the hugely positive response to the return of Scampi Nik Naks (and "The Nasty Dragon's" penetrating analysis that ice cream hasn't been the same since the invention of the Magnum): Do you prefer the snacks of today, or those of the past? Are there more brands you'd like to bring back from the wheelie-bin of history, or do you believe "we've never had it so good?" Do you wonder: Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time rewritten every line? And if we had the chance to do it all again... tell me - would we? Could we? The comments section would like to hear from you.

Comment: Snacks themselves don't change, man. Like everything else, the tragedy is in the globalised lack of choice. Back in medieval times, you could go to a shop's crisp department and see Walkers, Golden Wonder, Smith's, KP, Tudor and more all sharing rack space. Nowadays it takes a miracle to find a shop selling anything but Walkers. So even when people do make great things like KP Mini Chips and Golden Wonder Sausage&Tomato, you can't actually buy the bastards anywhere on the face of the planet.

(For example, I will pay GOOD MONEY to anyone who can actually find me salt'n'vinegar KP Mini Chips in mainland Britain. They definitely still make them, but evidently only as some kind of tax dodge, because ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE sells them, and if you ask KP where they go when they leave the factory they won't tell you.)

Comment: I see a shop which regularly sells Sausage and Tomato crisps.

I would love to see some old items, but mainly sub-brands of a still popular company.

Items like Jelly and Ice Cream Fruit Pastilles, Summer Fruit skittles, Pepsi Clear(never had it- what was it like), Mountain Dew.

I would love to try those once more.

Comment: For me things haven't been the same since: Milky Ways stopped coming in paper wrappers with the little cardboard tray, Walkers changed their flavour formulations, and stopped using the clear bags, and when they stopped making the Space 1999 ice lolly with the picture on the wrapper that only appeared when it warmed up Ahh... memories of my youth

Comment: Well i think what we really need is an equal balance of both. There should be more old fashioned sweet shops reopened. But in our era of one stop shopping who would go out of their way to give enough serious business to old time shops. All these new products seem to come only for a while and then leave. We want our instant gratification and if it isn't a success in a few moths goodbye new product. But i wouldn't want to give up my pringles. On a somewhat related topic anyone know where to get callard and bowser butterscotches?

The things I wouldn't mind seeing again are Treets, Funny Face and Canada Dry coke.

Are Mavericks still being made? Here in Birmingham I haven't been able to find one for a few months now.

I've noticed Highlanders are disintergrating...particularly the Savoury selection.

I hope not, as I think they are the best crisp manufacturers

Comment: I live near the Highlander Crisp Factory. I used to like the haggis flavoured ones, before the spannish or itallian company took over. And their 10p range called "big yins". Pickled onion ones were the best!

Comment: OK, i give up - what are Mavericks?

best link I've found so far for "Mavericks + Crisps":

http://www.incredible.org.uk/backlash/walkers_crisps.html

["Somebody tell Walkers, it's green for cheese and onion", Harry Hill once said. I decided that I would be the one...]

And so I put it to you that you should adopt the standard colour scheme for your crisps forthwith. Perhaps if you will not do this, you will at least explain your reasoning. For your information, I have listed all the other colours I could be bothered to remember, lest other flavours' packaging go awry.

Pink - Prawn Cocktail (prawns are pink) Brown - Worcester Sauce (Worcester sauce is brown) - or beef (also a nice brown) Yellow - Cheese (cheddar is a lovely yellow) Red - Ready salted (ready - RED-y) Black - unused - perhaps really well-done crisps Orange - chicken? Cheese again? Bit of an all-purpose colour! Lilac - unused - lovely colour - perhaps for a spicy snack as yet uninvented.

The flavours for Highlanders are very nice, and unique, and as I'm a fussy eater, its rare for me to eat every single bit in a pack, but I can with these. That's why I don't like McCoys- too many bad ones.

Does anyone remember what flavour Summer Fruit skittles were?

I think butter polos should be brought back.

Comment: The treats of the now seem more and more to be variations of currently existing treats. Presumably it's much cheaper to develop new products this way, and there's already a brand to leverage. It's a bit like Hollywood remaking proven hits. I don't think much has changed really - there appears to be more choice, but the choices all seem to be the same.

If you really want to get some new taste sensations, try hanging out in an Asian grocery - some of the savoury treats on offer in Asian grocery stores are quite excellent.

Off topic - I'm eating a Chocolate Creme Oreo - it's fantastic.

Comment: I think what annoys me most is the stealth changing of the recipes - I've loved Fruit Pastilles and Wine Gums since I was v. small, but there's no way they're the same as they used to be. Wine Gums in particular have got softer and somehow sweatier. Fruit Gums used to have flavour - especially the ones that came in the boxes, but now they all taste the same and have a gooey consistency that means they end up stuck to your teeth for hours. So I'll go for Yesteryear, if there's actually a counted vote taking place...

Comment: Each time Christmas rolls around, and the tins of Roses and Quality Street seem to appear magically in every office and front room in the land, i'm saddened by the abscence of my favourite flavours from chidhood.

I'm referring to the Roses lemon creme and the Quality Street gooseberry creme. They were always the sweets i'd rummage around for when passed the big tin, but both have long since vanished. In fact if you mention them to anyone under 30 nowadays all you get is blank looks. Same goes for the Terry's chocolate lemon incidentally. I'd love to see an old flavour guide leaflet from Roses or Quality Street in the 1970s to prove to others i'm right - but has anyone got one?

And it was a sad day when the coffee creme vanished too in the mid 90s.

Comment: Tubes were splendid - particularly if you mashed up cheap white bread to form a sort of rubbery pellet, then pushed it into the tube to form an airtight seal - instant dinnertime pea-shooter.

They were Smiths, for the record. Later years saw Tubes & Hoops, in an iconic green and red packet, which featured tubes along with strange, skinny Smiths made Hula Hoop facsimilles.

Comment: Hearing all of these cravings, you should visit our site. We sell a full range of flavoured salts that can be added to cooked hot chips or many other things such as sandwiches, popcorn, salads, etc. Imagine adding salt & vinegar flavoured salt to hot popcorn or cooked corn on a cob? Our range of flavoured salts are currently being designed for consumer use in shakers. The flavours so far are: Salt & vinegar, Biltong (jerky), Flame grilled BBQ, Fried chicken, Fruit chutney, BBQ chutney, Cheese, Cheese & onion, Sour cream and chives, Seafood, Green onion and Tomato, Lamb & mint, Cheese and chives and Mexican chilli. We are currently working to make the following available: Chilli tomato, Portuguese peri-peri, Lime and cilantro, Lemon pepper, Chakalaka, potato flavouring and Garlic butter. The salts are used in particular with the machines that we manufacture called Chipstix machines. It takes one raw unpeeled potato on a skewer put through the machine to sprial cut it and then deep fry it the old traditional way. You can then choose from your range of flavoured salts and all for just £1. Keep an eye out for this product being offered at your local fish 'n' chips shops, bootfairs or open events. This machine is currently up and running in North Kent. I have taken into account the flavoured crisps that you all miss and that we currently are not able to offer: Sausage & tomato, Pickled onion, Worcester sauce, Sweet & sour, Bacon, Bovril, Gammon, Sweetcorn, Hotdog & mustard and Savoury vinegar. Fanatastic range that would be. These have been noted and we will try to source these flavours to add to our range. Who knows maybe they will soon be on a shelf at your local Tesco or news agent? Take a look at the site, originating from sunny South Africa it is a True South African Delight.

Both crisps had TV adverts Tudor had a guy coming inot a shop and demanding his crisps and Brannigans some old guy on a bike I think? Comment: Space Raiders were original Outerspacers, in Chutney, Beefburger and Pickled Onion flavour. But thats not my comment I remember in the mid to late 70's that all the Crisp manufacturers tried to find that new flavour and it was Sweet and Sour.I myself liked Skips and as far as I remember Skips were originally sweet and sour and you may say I'm wrong but the reason why I make this statement is I detest Prawn Cocktail. When Golden Wonder brought out Prawn Cocktail in the mombo pink packet all the other manufacturers immediately did there own. I had gone down to Safeways (I remember this very clearly even now) got the required shopping for my mother and my allowed treat for going a packet of Sweet n' Sour Skips, opened it took a mouthful and immediately thought I'd been poisoned! My sister remembers them and the Tudor Sweet n' Sour. KP used to advertise them on TV with an animated Motorcyclist called Kevin.

Comment: The oldest or most out of date food I've seen was a shelf of 3-year old cans of soup in Sainsbury's, I was concerned about this and told a supervisor who removed them immediately. I have a pack of Greens Quick-Gel from 1978 that I keep meaning to use up, it is priced at 7 1/2p

Comment: We must be the only two people in the world that remember them. I've asked loads of people and they just look at me blankley, as if I'm making it up. Splicer is nicer. la la la la laaaa It was late 70's or early 80's and they were 7p each. I was about 10 years old and I remember having 14p and buying one for my friend.. I was good like that.. Striped, fruity and chewy. mmmmmm. not me.. the bar.. lol

and I only came to this site looking for Chipmunk Oxo crisps.. lol

ahhh does anyone remember Nibblettes? Nobody seems too. They were multi-coloured popcorn, that were fruit flavoured and resembled breasts.. that's why they banned them.. too saucy. the advert was something like" get your hands off my Nibblettes" I think.. that was in the 70's too

Comment: Wow! So many memories reading this (: I loved the ice cream chewits. I have been craving them for some time. What happened to them? I don't remember the name of it, but when I was a child (I'm 20 now), my friends and I bought these long cardboard tubes and inside was flavoured chewing gum. I remember there being pink and green (can't remember any flavours) and there was tons inside in a big sausage and it was cheap too! We used to buy it from Kwik Save (in the United Kingdom). I dont remember ever buying it any where else. I haven't seen it since. I can't remember what it was called or anything. I just remembered it as I was reading this and wondered if any one knows what I'm on about. Someone mentioned Walnut Whips. They are still around. I found them in Tesco, 3 in a pack (: What about Monkey Nuts? I think that's what they were called. A hard kind of toffee shaped like a monkey nut, with nuts inside. I haven't seen them since I was small.

Comment: Hi Deano, Yes, we used to get a Wilkinsons Sweet Shop every year for Christmas through one of the catalogues. I remember the little plastic scales and scoop and weights made of round sugar discs, some money coins made of sugar and some coins made of cardboard, plus the little paper bags and a huge variety of different sweets. Pity they don't make them anymore.
