Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: McDonald's freshly prepared Premium Salads
Posted: 10:49 Fri 03-10-2003. Price: 2.99. Location: Oxford Road (London), Reading Gate retail park (Reading). Sub-flavours: Bacon Ranch and Caesar. Nutritional unusualness: 'italian' cheese.
"Diarmuid Mallon" reports: This leaf based salad (opposed to the previous pasta based ones) come in 4 rather confusing combinations. You can have Ranch (Ranch dressing, real bacon and cheddar cheese) or Caesar (Caesar dressing, basil and roasted garlic croutons, plus italian (sic) hard cheese); which you then top with either crispy premium chicken (breaded) or chicken breast fillet (unbreaded). The combinations were not only confusing for me, but cause almost total confusion at the till. In both cases the manager was called to work out how to take my order. The salad is okay, but not up to the standard of KFC's. The cheeses were awful - the cheddar was bland looked like it had come out of a mincer, whilst with the 'italian' I think they cut up the packaging by mistake and served that. The chicken breast is on the spongy side of yuck, far too much injected beef [allegedly - Ed]. Finally the packaging needs a rethink. The bowl's top refused to snap shut, and the McD's bag was too narrow, so the salad had to go in sideways. A big disappointment after the classy bag at KFC.

...Phew - please View comments for Diarmuid's detailed nutritional breakdown. Not too much to add to this epic sighting, except: Does this mark the end of McD's New Tastes experimentation? Has anyone tried their new Toffee Crisp McFlurry? And will they be launching their own challenger to the mighty Meatshake brand?

Comment: I looked at McD's website re the nutritional aspects of the meal: Qrt Pounder with cheese, reg fries, reg coke: 833 kc, 92.1g carbs 38g sugar 35.7g fat Ranch with fillet, mineral water: 346 kc, 7g carbs 5.3g sugar 20g fat Ranch with premium , mineral water: 447 kc, 15.4g carbs 4.5g sugar 28.1g fat Caesar with fillet , mineral water: 264 kc, 12.6g carbs 5.4g sugar 10.3g fat Caesar with premium , mineral water: 365 kc, 21.1g carbs 4.6g sugar 18.4g fat

So those looking to be healthy and lower their carb intake, the Caesar Fillet (and ditch the croutons) is the best option.

Comment: woo, low carb options finally. although to their credit mcd's are very good at making burgers without the buns on request.

Comment: charl, if they make the burgers without the buns how do you eat them? do you have to ask for a breakfast fork as well?

Comment: yes, they make the burgers in the breakfast trays and give you cutlery. it's dead civilised.

Comment: I had one of these recently. While I'm more likely to order one of these salads than any of the other current McD offerings I didn't rate the chicken itself.

It was a bit on the spongey side of moist - which to me suggested "pumped chicken" to a level that even my plebeian palate can detect. 47829 0 56
