Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Hershey's Kiss Bar/ Guylian Praline
Posted: 14:08 Fri 31-10-2003. Price: 59p/ 49p. Location: Newsagent, Finchley Road, London. Nutritional unusualness: Kiss Bar - Thiamine Mononitrate, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and "Vanillin, an artificial flavour".
Snackspot reports: Great packaging, somewhat uninspired product for this Toblerone-style agglomeration of Creamy Milk Chocolate with Cookie Bits Hershey's Kissies (you may just be able to see the cookie bits in the image here, though let me know if you object to product pictures featuring bite marks). The Guylian Praline bar, on the other hand, is one of the most chocolatey-tasting countlines I've ever sampled, and - in keeping with the rest of their range - each chunk is decorated with a graduated white chocolate bas-relief of different forms of sea life, including scallops and what appears to be a prawn.

...In other soft-centred goodness: Howstuffworks has fascinating insight into (most of) the Krispy Kreme doughnut manufacturing process; while NiceCupOfTeaEtc is leading with the extended range of Mars Galaxy cake bars, and Mr Nicey himself is rumoured to be bringing some of his Hobnob Flapjacks samples to the B3ta Halloween Party in London this evening.

Comment: Having had Hershey's chocolate before, mixed with wafer things and marshmallows and toasted over an open barbeque, I was a anticipating a bombardment of my sweetness registers. I was, however, a little surprised to find that the bar (42p, Martin's Newsagent, Summertown, Oxford - the one at the top of Banbury Road), was not artery thickeningly sweet. The bar is an interesting shape and, coming in a prism shaped box, is made up of many glued together hershey kisses. The cookie inside looks like the dark, black goodness of Oreo cookie outers but it's flavour is overpowered by the chocolatey mounds it is buried deep within. Although I enjoyed the Anglicized American snack it was rather dull and much like many of the other chocolatey snacks around today.

HUGE list of ingredients, too.

Comment: I bought a Kiss Bar today, and checked the package for the calorie count as part of a less-than-stringent diet regime that includes the belief that merely looking at the nutrition information before eating something might somehow help.

Except it wan't there. A long list of ingredients, but no familiar kJ/carb/fat box. Aren't these legally required in the EU/UK?

Comment: I don't think they are Lee - only if the product makes a specific claim to be "low in fat" or sugar or whatever.

Which, in Hershey's case, seems kind of unlikely...

Comment: I think I found this out by looking at the Euro versions of last year's Magnum 7 Deadly Sins - http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0302141653cpi , which have no nutritional info whatsoever

- but it doesn't seem to be the case in Australia (or the US?), as per Adrian's observations that Magnum Choc Work Orange had "19 grams of saturated fat" and Magnum Wood Choc had a whopping 27...

Comment: Crikey, you're right. The relevent UK law is "The Food Labelling Regulations 1996" in which it is optional (as with 90/496/EEC)

But apparently there are proposals to update the EU regulations... http://[URL display truncated] 52026 3 76

Comment: I just had a hershey's kiss bar as well. When I didn't find the calorie count on the back I tried to look it up online. Even the hershey's website doesn't have the calorie count on the hershey's kiss bar. That's ANNOYING!!
