Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Strawberry Tunes
Posted: 12:24 Mon 17-11-2003. Price: 59p/37g box (though this seems to be a hefty markup by the grumpily-staffed establishment where I bought them, 49p looks to be a commoner tag). Location: Miserable sour-faced newsagents, Birmingham Bullring. Sub-flavours: Also available in cherry, blackcurrant. Nutritional unusualness: "Now Longer Lasting/ Same Great Taste/ SUGAR FREE".
"Stuart Campbell" reports: It was the extremely cute deep-pink box that caught my eye, but the contents that finally soothed the tortuous pain of a day in Birmingham. These little oval pretend-medicine drops are just about the best new sweet I've tasted all year. The subtle, soft strawberry flavour combines with the understated menthol to genius effect, switching from one to the other over and over in tiny waves while you suck for, frankly, a grown-up taste sensation. Whether they do, in fact, medically assist your respiration is something this reporter is unable to scientifically ascertain, but in any case don't wait until you've got a cold to get some of these, because they deserve your taste buds' full attention.

...In what threatens to be a week of strawberry-themed sightings, "Stuart" hits the nail on the head here with Tunes' response to the popularity of semi-medicinal products like Halls' Soothers, almost 50% of which are purchased by customers who "don't just use them when they have a sore throat" (What next? Mild and minty Fisherman's Friends?). Still, the joke is on them with their current "Where's your head at?" TV ad campaign, as the meeting which the Tunes-consumer's head has escaped from appears to be about extended web-markup language XML, and sounds really interesting!

Comment: You're talking like these are nice! I must admit the packet was quite a nice colour.. but the attractiveness begins and ENDS there. They taste like prunes and do nothing for you.. the point of these things i have yet to realise..

Comment: Theyre just slightly menthol-ated lozenges. They do the usual things medicated lozenges do, clear blocked noses and temporarily sooth/distract you from your Sore throat.
