Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Burton's (new) Fish 'n' Chips
Posted: 16:23 Wed 26-11-2003. Price: 25p/ packet. Location: Miserable sour-faced newsagents, Birmingham Bullring. Sub-flavours: Seem to be simultaneously on sale with the old kind, depending where you live. Nutritional unusualness: See below.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Fish 'n' Chips were spotted here recently, amid some controversy over whether they'd ever been away, but these are definitely something entirely new. A new pack design reprising the old "newspaper" motif is the cosmetic difference, but in fact these are a whole new snack. The older red-pack F'n'C list 16 ingredients on the back, but the new variety credits a whopping 28. Contributing to the new but not the old varieties are such diverse taste-constituents as milk, vinegar powder, sugar, "Triglycerides of Coconut Oil" and a slew of others not previously found in the snack. In practice, the new style is a very different proposition, considerably dissimilar in both texture and flavour, and not for the better in this snack-fan's opinion, though this judgement is tempered by the fact that Fish 'n' Chips were always a pretty inconsistent bet - one pack capable of a strong and tangy taste sensation while the very next would resemble cardboard boxes set on fire then put out with stagnant pondwater. Clearly, further investigation is required. I may be gone some time.

...And good luck with that "Stuart" - for those of us who continue to enjoy Cooking with Crisps (link courtesy of the World's Worst Food), those new ingredients could make all the difference!

Comment: FLASH! Further investigation in fact reveals that these are billed as "Salt'n'Vinegar flavour", as opposed to the previous ones which are credited to "Fisn'n'chip flavour". THIS MAY EXPLAIN THE DISCREPANCY.

Comment: thanks for that Stu - and could you just clear this up once and for all: is this a crisp or a savoury biscuit?
Posted: 19:30 Wed 26-11-2003 by "Stuart Campbell" # permalink comment
Comment: I believe that legally speaking it's a biscuit, because in order to perform my further investigation I bought a box from the cash'n'carry, and there was no VAT on them. There's VAT on crisps, but not on "biscuit" snacks like Mini Cheddars, so I'd say that was semi-conclusive.

Comment: Ah, the memories of eating Fish 'n' Chips snacks as a child. Of course, they tasted nothing like real fish 'n' chips, but that didn't seem to matter. For some reason, I only ever remember buying them in Superdrug - I think they were the only shop in the town centre that sold them.

This is probably another one in a long line of snack foods that are being re-introduced to cash in on the "school disco" trend. There is big money to be had in reminiscence at the moment.

Comment: Oops, ok... so I'm uncoordinated and got over-enthusiastic and hit 'return' to early... but Burtons should stick to what they're good at... and that's those little 10p packets of Puffs... but I want BIGGER BAGS? The 10p packets aren't even a mouth-full.

Comment: I remember the pig shaped puffs from the 80's. I beleive that they were baked bean flavour. I even remember some Australien imported puff crisps that were shaped like Kangeroos my Grandma used to buy us from her local grocers in Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Can't remember that flavour though. Doubt it was Kangeroo as that was unheard of in those days.

Comment: I remember that classic old bag of fish & chips from when I was a kid and have been on a hunt for them ever since. As I recall they were about 0.003pence per bag, which was more like a bag of pure salt with some little bisuits floating around inside. When all other "crips" rocketed in price these just never budged. (actually it was more like 5p) Totally disgruntled about how they've mucked about with our savoury snacks, taken most of them off the market, and instead concentrated on rubbish chocolate! Monster munch have gone downhill too, with lots more air in them, and why aren't they different shaped "monsters" in them anymore? Where are Roast Beef flavour? Give us back our Fish & Chips, Give us back our savoury snacks in their original form!

(may start a campaign on this)

Comment: I CONTACTED BURTONS SITED NR ECCLES,MANCHESTER &THEY CONFIRM THEIR 'POTATO PUFFS'SNACK ARE NO MORE.THE MAD(BUT LOVELY WITH IT)FOLK ON HERE WILL OF COURSE RECALL THEY WERE ONCE AVAILABLE IN SALTED,SALT N VIN,CHEESE N ONION,LAMB N MINT SAUCE,BEEF,CHEESE N TOMATO &THEIR LAST ADDITION BEFORE THEY CANCELLED PRODUCTION:BACON N BROWN SAUCE.THE LAST THREE FLAVOURS WERE MY FAVOURITE OF THE BRAND.A GREAT SHAME BUT NEVERTHELESS YOU HAVE GOT IT FROM ME & FROM BURTONS.

AS FOR 'FISH N CHIPS/BURGER N CHIPS/CHICKEN N CHIPS THEY STOPPED BEING PRODUCED BY BURTONS MANY MOONS AGO. THEY DID HAVE A RECENT REVIVAL AS THE PICTURE ABOVE SHOWS BUT THIS WAS SHORT LIVED AND WAS JUST THE FISH N CHIPS.NOT NEARLY AS STRONG FLAVOURED SO I BOUGHT SOME THEN DIDNT BOTHER ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE UK IT SEEMS! WALKERS TAUNTED US WITH A HOLLOW TUBE / CRISP VARIETY FROM THE FRENCH FRIES RANGE & A SIMILAR ''BUSCUIT'' VARIETY IS ON STILL ON SALE IN SOME ASDA'S. THIS IS AN AMERCAN BRAND,IN A SMALL FOIL BAG THAT SITS UP ON ITS OWN.SALT N VINEGAR FLAVOUR &A STRONG CHEESE FLAVOUR ALTHOUGH I DUNNO WHY YOU WOULD WANT TO SELL CHEESE FLAVOURED FISH SHAPED BUSCUITS!THEY DO TASTE STRONG BUT QUITE WOODY AFTERTASTE.NOT NICE! THEY HAVE ACTUALLY FEATURED ON THIS SITE ALREADY. THEY ARE RIGHTLY SO AS SUMBODY ELSE MENTIONED NEAR THE GO AHEAD/SNACKATACK RANGES.

REDMILL ALSO SELL FISH N CHIP FLAVOURED BUSCUITS IN GARAGES/ LATESHOPS&MOTORWAY SERVICES BUT THEY ARE A POOR SECOND TO THE ORIGINAL AND JUST LACK BURSTS OF FLAVOUR WHICH BURTONS ONCE MANUFACTURED.

FOR THE RECORD ''THE PIG SHAPED'' CRISPS MENTIONED HERE WERE CALLED ''PIGLETS'' AND WERE MADE BY KP OR BURTONS & CAME IN BACON N BEAN FLAVOUR & BARBEQUE N BEAN FLAVOUR.

''SMAX'' AFORE MENTIONED WERE MADE BY BURTONS AND WERE INDEED BACON FLAVOURED BUTTON SHAPED BUSCUITS. THIS OF COURSE WAS WHEN WALKERS DID NOT DOMINATE THE SHELVES WITH BLAND CORPORATE OFFERINGS INTENT ON BUYING UP AND THEN DESTROYING ALL ORIGINALITY /GIMMERKY/ FUNNY SHAPED/STRONG FLAVOURED BAD-FOR-YOU NOSTALGIC SNACKS AND CRISPS. LONG LIVE GOLDEN WONDER, KP , SMITHS AND BURTONS AND THEIR GOLDE AGED BRANDS SUCH AS GRIDDLES, TUBES, WIKETS,SKYDIVERS,BONES AND SKULLS, FOOTBALL CRAZIES,LARGER MONSTER MUNCH AND WHEN KP AND GOLDEN WONDER RUKED WITH VAST VARIETIES OF STRONG FLAVOURED FAT GUT ARTERY CLOGGING GORGUS CRISPS.AMEN.

Could a group of us get together and petition Burtons? Or, even petition another crisp company like Red Mill to buy the recipe off them and start producing them? I've spoken to hundreds of people who really miss them. When I see the absolutely crap crisps that are on the supermarket shelves it really makes me wonder how brilliant crisps like this can be allowed to go out of production.

Comment: I too wrote to Burtons a couple of years ago,to learn they had decided to discontinue the Potato Puffs I enjoyed so much.I think the problem was that they seemed to regard them as a minor part of their range, you never saw them alongside crisps from other makers, and the main times I saw them in the past twenty or so years they were in an odd corner of bakers' shops....I was especially happy when I came across the occasional puff with a generous quantity of fat inside it!

Comment: Well if enough of us were to put our money where our mouths are, we could commission Walkers to make Walters Puffs under licence (IF they still own the rights) and sell them either through this site, e-bay or even a far-sighted cash & carry.

If they're a success (as they deserve to be) we could all make a killing.

Who else would be interested?

Comment: Potato Puffs are available to my knowledge from RTP Crips Ltd, 78 Allison St, Birmingham. 0121 643 4339

I bought a box of them from the above wholesaler in 1998 for £3.82

I think a lot of the above discussions are about alternative products. Potato Puffs are about 25mm in length, are VERY light in weight, pale white in colour and resemble tiny razor shells. They come in 5 flavours but the best are plain.

Comment: I absolutely loved potato puffs. They were sold at break in my primary school in Birmingham, back in the early '60s.

In the 1980s, I was thrilled to discover that they were being sold in the university's shop ~ not quite the same as the originals ~ but still very nice.

I discovered this thread whilst trying to find a place that sold them. How disappionting to find out that they are no longer available anywhere!

I wonder if another company is still selling a similar snack, or if they have now disappeared completely and for ever?! That would be sad.

Posted: 18:25 Fri 11-Jan-2008 by "Talk Show Host" # permalink comment
Comment: I don't think anything similar exists or has ever for that matter. I remember that 9 times out of 10 you would get a pack that was almost entirely crushed (not puffs at all!) and the bottom of the pack was simply like eating salt from a packet.

Still, they were the cheapest snack at lunchtime in my school and so they were always first choice. This was due to the simple logic that any money left over from lunch time could be squandered in the corner shop. I would just buy as many gummy sweets as I could with my remaining money - a bit like I do today when I walk past a sweet shop that still weighs sweets out for you.

There is a debate in itself concerning the difference between pre-packed and 'weigh as you wait' sweets. I always think the weighed out taste (and smell) better. What do others think?

Thank you for your e.mail. Unfortunately, we have no plans to re-introduce Potato Puffs as the production line has now been dismantled and Burtons Foods have moved away from the production of savoury snacks.

Sorry we cannot be of more help to you but thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Kind regards

Comment: Ok - I too have been thinking about the little red packets of Walters - the best - potato puffs. I have read all of the above and wish some one would take up the challenge. Now I have not seen the mention of another crisp snack - original Pom-Bear teddy shaped potato snack - if you can get over the fact that they are teddy shaped, they are as near as you will come to the taste of Potato Puffs - not quite as dry - but satisfying none the less, and most imporatantly available widely. They are made by Intersnack Ltd, Corby, Northants.http://www.pom-bear.co.uk - perhaps these are the people to approach, for a potato puff resurrection.
