Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Nestle Vice Versas
Posted: 12:55 Mon 12-01-2004. Price: 40p or so. Location: Random cornershop in Viewforth, Edinburgh. Sub-flavours: none. Nutritional unusualness: Beeswax, listed as a "glazing agent".
"Lara" reports: I saw these when I was in my local shop and I was immediately taken back to around a decade ago when Nestlé manufactured these for most of Britain to enjoy. I wonder if this is a sign of a comeback or purely one of those chocolate anomalies that I see in small obscure shops now and again. Either way, what a nostalgia trip! These are much like Galaxy Minstrels in shape, and are described as "Milk chocolate in a white crisp sugar shell and white chocolate in a brown crisp sugar shell".

...A close-run thing, this one, as "Lara" got her sighting in first, but "Commander Zorg" provided both further confirmation of their revival, and a slightly better picture, adding: Going to Nottingham feels like slipping back in time anyway what with the high number of youths in cheap sportswear - this reappearance of an axed sweet innovation only adds to the feeling that you’ve stepped off the train in 1993. Londis, which is an exciting new supermarket chain if you've only ever been in Nottingham, had a stock of Vice Versas. We only went in for a milk shake - imagine our surprise! (View comments for the Commander's full taste-test...)

Comment: Two packs were bought and an immediate taste test carried out on the bus. They're the same dreamy mixture of white chocolate in a dark shell (and, yes, vice versa). The packaging and logo look the same to me too, although in my youthful foolishness I neglected to save an original bag for future reference so can't be 100% certain. We, the people, need to give whoever’s in charge of Nestle’s decision-making a citizen's knighthood.

Comment: I have just rang Nestle and the polite man at the other end of the phone told me that Vice Versas are out for a limited time only! He says they've been available since December 2003, and will continue as long as stocks last. He also said that they will be seeing how well they do and if popular they could become a permanant fixture on our confectionary shelves! I urge you to email/phone/write to Nestle and tell them how great Vice Versas are so that this can happen! And buy lots of packets of them. But not all of them- I want some for myself!

Comment: I saw these in Morrison's at the weekend (the new big one near Rotherham if anyone's *really* interested) so they aren't just turning up in obscure local newsagents. And whatever happened to Judge Reinhold anyway?

Comment: Judge Reinhold is very good what I think may be the final episode of "Clerks: The Animated Series" (a courtroom drama in which he plays the judge - Judge Reinhold, that is!)

otherwise it's just more and more of those straight to video "Beethoven" sequels: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001662/

Comment: The Kaptain liked the 'Vice Versa' kandy when it was out several years ago. However he only desired the darkened shells with their internal white chocolato. The light shells with there deep dark interior make him nervous and did not bring sweet kandy wet tongues in his mouth.

The Kaptain would therefore like to know if he too has a 'vice versa' who likes the light shelled darken cored kandies. The Kaptain could exchange kandies with you! Peer - 2 - peer kandy swaps, enjoying what one's tongue likes best, be it dark or white chocolato.

The Kaptain would also like to know if the distribution is a klean and fair 50:50 or some altogether more sinister.

Comment: Given your respective ranks, would it be permissible for "Kaptain Korolev" to swap with "Commander Zorg"?

I think we should all have honorary honorifics round here - I'd like to be "Senor Snackspot" (when dealing with American products) - or, for the Asian market - simply "Snackspot-san".

Comment: Sadly I too prefer the creamy white centres of the dark-shelled ones, even going so far as to eat all the white-shelled ones first to "get them out of the way". I fear this imbalance will be repeated throughout society and we may never meet our vice versa soulmates :(

Comment: Just trying some Vice Versas from Woolies on Edgware Road: the white chocolate ones (with brown coating) are disgusting, while the white-coated ones - thank god - taste like a giant Smartie. (And what's worse, the colour scheme keeps making me forget which is which!)

Of course, with exactly 2 votes in favour of each colour now, we begin to see how the cosmic balance of "yin" and "yang" is maintained...

Comment: Alex's comment is spot-on. Until I read that, I had never put the thought into words, but he is right, Minstrels do smell faintly like balloons that have dwindled. Anyone any other incongruous smells? I always feel opening a bag of Frazzles somehow smells like a fart in a cinema and generally go off the idea of eating them.

Comment: Fry's 5-centre was orange, lemon, lime, pineapple, and strawberry fondants in the one chocolate bar. All fruits, no coffee, no mint (though Fry's did a peppermint cream bar in a green wrapper). I should know, I had a craving for them when pregnant and got through loads.

Comment: Fabulous is right - it was 5 different fruit flavours. Although, IIRC, the bar was helpfully divided into *six* segments. So the flavours never actually lined up properly with the segments. You'd get a piece with 2/3 lime and 1/3 strawberry, for example.

Comment: Like eating the Koran (if the Koran was edible). Little Pellets of sugared racialy-themed harmonious delight. Although quite late, the revenge of the Nestle Vice Versas has eventually taken a hold of Stoke. Stoke my mouth with a generous spade of Vice Versas, that's what I say. Neithter chocolate is superior; you're just discriminatory in your prejudice of the two confectionaries. Look to the Vice VersaS. Afterall, what's the Vice without the Versa (and vice versa)? Oh, and how about re-releasing Cadbury's Astros? (Not that they tasted that good in the first place). Oh, and Cadbury's Wildlife bars. I liked those.

Comment: Wildlife bars are still around Jimnopody, just rebranded; they went the way of the Wispa. Have a look in Woolies and you may find bars of Cadburyland Dairy Milk in the same size and shape as the old Wildlife bars- they're the same extra-sweet chocolate too!

Comment: I am pleased to see Nestle Vice Versas are still knocking about. I have found memories of them because my best friend and I appeared in the test marketing for them when I was about seventeen. This could explain why they never really took off as I was skinny and geeky and my friend was over weight! The only reason that we got to be in the adverts was because my friends Dad worked for the ad agency and the modelling agency had let them down, meaning that they had the studio and photographer were booked but no male models. I remember we got £30, all the Vice Versas we could eat and an all expenses paid day to fancy London (very exciting when you are Seventeen and live in a boring suburb). The test marketing was being done in the South West and Yorkshire (I think) and our images where to go on buses and billboards.

Comment: Hi. A box of vice versas arrived in our school canteen last week,(Plymouth, uk) and were sold out by the end of the day! After investigation to see whether more would be coming by many people - the cook told us it came with an order of chocolate and she hadn't asked for them! Having scoured her stock lists and suppliers, she can't find anywhere to order them from! Will continue the hunt!

Comment: Following on from CC's comment (I'm her sis) I've been investigating. This is a response I got from Nestle about them -

"Thank you for your recent enquiry via email.

Vice Versas were only available as a limited edition, starting in December 2003 until stocks lasted.

Although sales of the Limited Edition Vice Versas have been very good, we need to fully evaluate the data from market research and, indeed, from letters and telephone calls, such as yours - therefore there are no plans at present to introduce this product on a permanent basis. We hope that this is not too disappointing a reply - our marketing policy is constantly under review and your comments have been noted.

Thank you once again for taking the trouble to contact us and for the interest you have shown in our company."

Lets hope they take note of all their adoring fans!! By the way, I haven't actually tried these so called melting peices of heaven!! I've just heard of them by College reputation!

I think they officially 'go off' in late November.

No doubt this would have been sorted had they gone back into full production - but I wonder whether they thought they were more trouble than they were worth, or something.
