Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Fanta Apple Splash
Posted: 18:44 Tue 20-01-2004. Price: 55p. Location: Office canteen, GreenPark, Reading. Nutritional unusualness: "Apple, Kiwi and Lime Flavour Soft Drink with Sugar and Sweeteners".
"Diarmuid Mallon" reports: Spotted this at work, so no need for any covert purchasing! The apple flavour is much like that of a juicy ripe red apple, when you bite through the peel. No hint of the kiwi or lime at all. NB Atkins-followers, despite proclaiming "Low Sugar", it weights in at 20kcal per 100ml. Rather more than even Fanta "Diet" Orange... I think.

..."Diarmuid" here confirms "Bob's" earlier sighting, who perceptively described it as "sweeter and more limey than Apple Tango" and "not as fizzy as the other Fanta range". The "Low Sugar" flash is a reference to the new mid-calorie soda craze - ie, about half the sugar of full-fat products, but without diet versions' offputting social stigma and taste. The same article also predicts a mid-calorie version of Coke, Diet Sprite becoming Sprite Zero, and Sprite Remix to become BerryClear this year - we've had one unconfirmed US sighting of Diet Coke with Lime so far, but god-dammit, we need to see the evidence!

Comment: Is going to be called sprite zero in the U.K. and do you know of any new drinks that will be out this year?.....

Comment: Not other than this - though the "mid-calorie" Coke sounds great!
Posted: 23:27 Wed 21-01-2004 by "Kaptain Korolev" # permalink comment
Comment: Not stictly on topic but.......

The Kaptain has noticed a major taste difference between 'diet Coke' and 'Coke Light' imported from Germania, despite the fact they are both supposed to have no sugar. Coke Light seems to have a sugary taste, not the pseudo aspartame sickness of the diet variety.

Coke Light is a rare beast, here for a moment then suddenly.....GONE!

Comment: i too have noticed this about french coke light. i can't stand the flavour of it, horrid. give me the palate cleansing nutrasweet goodness any day...
Posted: 12:15 Thu 22-01-2004 by Snackspot # permalink comment
Comment: - maybe Coke Light is flavoured with "Splenda" or something, and Diet Coke with Nutrasweet/ Aspartame?

11. What is the difference between Coke Light and Diet Coke?

In certain countries, the word "diet" is not used to describe low-calorie foods and beverages. In these countries, we offer Coke Light. The sweetener blend used for Coke Light is formulated for each country based on consumer preference.

[Snackspot - maybe a euphemism for "countries more worried about alleged side-effects of Aspartame"? http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0303182052cas ]

Comment: Dunno why this is called Apple Splash, can't taste the apple just the Kiwi. Not one I'd buy again. As for it being a 'mid range' calorie drink, it's not as tasteless as diet drinks but better than having a swig of sugar syrup!

Comment: Didn't check Sorry!!

Have found a web page which tells you it's Aspartame:

(You can translate this at http://babelfish.altavista.com)

But it also says that it goes under the guise of Nutrasweet amongst other names.

Comment: Since yesterday, Coca-Cola Sweden offers 'Fanta Green Apple' which tastes a lot like red! apple-juice like described above, I wonder whether it's the same mixture as in the UK or not???? - sadly enough there's not a single drop of real apple juice in it, it's all artifical flavors, boooooo :-/

Comment: why do we always get the BORING flavours. Can't we have Watermelon Fanta like they do in Greece? That really was wonderfully refreshing!!!!!!!

Comment: I live in San Antonio, TX, and today I traveled accross the border into Mexico. I got thirsty and bought a "Coca Cola Light" and was amazed at the taste. I was expecting "Diet Coke" but instead was very pleased to find that it tasted very similar to Coke Classic, with only a small artificial sweetner taste. It was in fact sweetened with aspertame. I wish they sold this Mexican Coke Light in america. It's so much better tasting!

Am I going to die faster from consuming more aspertame? Who cares, it tastes good. In fact, bought a whole bunch to bring back.

Comment: I remember trying the flavour at around January. It has a niceish taste, but was dissapointed to see 'Low Sugar' printed on it. Why can't they make that the 'diet' version and have an aspartameless 'full fat' version. It would taste better still.

Now for the taste, it tastes like fresh cox apples, can't really taste the lime or kiwi. Not surprised there, since the only juice is apple juice. The flavourings for the lime and kiwi don't seem to be tasted. Did you know, flavourings are esters?

I do agree with Dobbie, there should be more interesting flavours(like watermelon, although I don't like melons). There could be strawberry and banana known as Strawbanana, peach and apricot being called Tangxotic. We should also have grape, pineapple and strawberry flavours like they do in America. The annoying thing is that the coca-cola site don't have an email address, which means I can't email suggestions, which might make them think.

Comment: Of course you won't die from consuming aspartame, it's just two connected proteins (an amine and an amide). Proteins in large amounts aren't good for the kidneys, but since aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, they hardly use any to make it taste sweet.

Comment: Interesting flavours can be bought in France.

How about FANTA GREENZ - Ingredients: "Melon, Citron Vert, Pomme" (0.5, 0.5 and 3%) and ... "Aux Extraits de Ginseng"!!! It ofcourse tastes horrendous!

Also available in France are the flavours "Madness" and "Latina" (the former tasting like a Aussie Ska group, while the latter being the tasty bodily juices from Jennifer Lopez???)

Oddily, all Belgian Fantas are low cal (except for regular Orange), thus aspartame ("* a source of fenylalanine").

We, cloggies, have to live with Fanta Fresh Apple, which contains 4% apple juice and 1% lemon. No kiwis here.

(yes, besides Pringles cans I do have a small collection of Fanta cans aswell)

Comment: Belfast is in the UK, because it is in Northern Island. I don't think Sprite Zero is in the UK. I've only seen the 'full fat' version and Sprite Light. I think it's called Sprite Zero in mainland Europe. It's a shame that Sprite Remix never came to the UK. :( It just shows how picky the companies are over countries.

Comment: Fanta Grape is available in the UK in Brighton, its bloody expensive - £0.85 a can - and is imported from South Africa - thank GOD for the lifting of sanctions - when is it going to be released in the Uk properly? god alone knows, but it's 'da bomb'.

Comment: I just returned from a week in London (I live in the US - New York City). I had Fanta Orange in London -- MUCH different and much better than the US kind. I also discovered taste differences between the UK Diet Coke, Light Coke, Diet Pepsi VS. the US Diet Coke/Pepsi. :)

Comment: Some people like to discuss celebrities they'll never meet and who have no impact on their lives. Some people watch football matches that do not affect anything important in this world.

The only difference the food and drink are tangible! We're in a position where we can have firsthand experience of our interest instead of reading recycled rumours and half baked fashion tips in a gossip rag or somesuch. I know we wouldn't die from lack of Paris Hilton or Premiership scandal but hey, we all need to eat right?

So stick that up your Heat magazine.

Comment: I really think you guys are nuts if you think the Aspertaime Diet Coke tastes better than Coca Light. The French Diet Coke tastes much better and no it's not environment influenced as I brought some home to the US to drink here. It is slightly sweet with no aftertaste. Why isn't the DC in America like this????

I think the Soda's in the US are generally terrible. All corn sweetened and nutra sweet(ed).. Terrible but I guess they use the cheapest ingredients.
