Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Frijj The Simpsons Limited Edition "Hey Hey Banoffee Pie"
Posted: 13:30 Thu 05-02-2004. Price: 85p. Location: Sainsbury's, London NW3. Nutritional unusualness: "Doesn't contain real banoffee pies!" - but does contain sugar, glucose syrup, a whopping 13g carbohydrate per 100ml.
Snackspot reports: Looks like Homer's getting the boot, as Krusty the Clown is pictured on the front of this one, stuffing a "banoffee pie" into his scary clown face. The "toffee, banana and biscuit flavour" tastes like banana milk shake with Frijj's standard burnt toffee aftertaste - I know people go on about how satirical The Simpsons is (Krusty's catchphrase: "I heartily endorse this event or product!"), but the contrast between this product's advertised benefits ("made with fresh milk", "less than 1% fat", and "rich in calcium") and the higher-than-Coca-Cola sugar content seems to be taking irony a bit far.

...In other dairy developments: Novartis' Banoffee Options instant hot chocolate should be on sale now, to be followed by "Spiced Ginger" (and two other limited editions) this year; Nestle have launched Munch Bunch Drinky (described elsewhere as a "very addictive drinking yoghurt... as with all yoghurts it's not good to have too many so I limit my kids to 1 a day"); and Milk Link aim to "challenge existing perceptions of long-life milk" with their new UHT offering Moo - maybe they could use that old Jeremy Hardy routine: "They say you can leave UHT milk on the shelf for a year - and you do!"

Comment: so there am I pooh-poohing (if that's the expression) that "Drinky" reviewer who only allows their kids 1 per day "otherwise the consequences are not good" - and suddenly I realise they might be the very same symptoms that "Nebbish" described!: http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0310092212daa#20031010141000

Comment: That's rather unfair! Most Frijj flavours are about 13g/100ml carbohydrate, and a McDonald's milkshake is 20g/100ml! These Frijj Simpsons special editions are *lovely* by the way.

Comment: uh, yeah but that would be 65g per 500ml which is the equivalent of two mars bars.

Comment: It's nicer than two Mars Bars. ;)

Comment: OK, I didn't mean to single Krusty's "Hey Hey Banoffee Pie" out for special treatment, I was just a bit shocked that a product that's promoted as a healthy milk-based product contains almost 3 times as much sugar as skimmed milk, and nearly as much as ready-to-drink Ribena

Comment: Well, some of the carbohydrate will be starch rather than sugar - I'm not sure why they don't split it out in the list. It's surely not *that* surprising that a milkshake will have considerably more sugar than milk?

Comment: "some of the carbohydrate will be starch rather than sugar" - yes, odd of them not to point that out (nesquik powder + 100ml milk comes to about 12.5g carbohydrate, and that's *all* sugar - no complex carbohydrates in milk, from the looks of things)

and, yes, even I was surprised (partly because I'd been taken in by the "made with fresh milk", "less than 1% fat", and "rich in calcium" stuff - I know, more fool me) - and also because I was brought up to believe (by the radical 2000AD spinoff "Crisis", no less) that Coke was "full of sugar", and now it seems to be one of the *less* sugary drinks out there!

Comment: Had a "NEW" vanilla flavour Frijj yesterday (only NOW do they think the market is ready?). Nothing to get excited about, even if you're a vanilla fan.

Ah, what the hell. If vanilla excites you - go ahead and get excited. Whooo! Yeah!
