Click pic to view comments Confirmed sighting: Ribena Oooohh, Aarghh
Posted: 14:12 Wed 03-03-2004. Price: from 55p or 65p for two. Location: L&D Hospital, Beds/ Superdrug, Victoria Station. Nutritional unusualness: Not to be used with a child's dummy. Based on Ribena Light.
OK, I'm officially declaring this one a tie, as "Flameproof" was first to ask [regarding Ribena Aarghh]: Is this a limited edition? I can't see it lasting long if it's not. The main flavour is much the same as standard Ribena Light, but there is a reasonable amount of tingle in the aftertaste - enough that most under-5-year-olds I know would probably reject it. I'm not sure what their target market is with this one.

...But "Saramond" managed to provide a photo of the complete ("The Wurzels"-inspired?) set, commenting: Ribena Oooohh claims that "freezing tingles on your tongue zing, send chills down your spine" - I didn't think it tasted any different to normal Ribena, just left a weird aftertaste. Ribena Aarahh was much better, not sure about their claim - "This is hot stuff, too hot to handle" - but did have a slightly fiery taste. Saying that though, my tastebuds have been too well trained by fiery ginger beer and extra hot Nandos chicken to detect spices that make most people's eyes water!!

Comment: Apparently so Mike (great spotting by the way, Flameproof and Saramond - and isn't Nandos, like, the *best restaurant ever*?)

I haven't seen them up close myself, but I wonder if the "Oooohh" variant's cooling effect is caused by the sorbitol they used to put in Trebor Cool Mints ("Excessive consumtion may produce laxative effects!")

Comment: On Danny Baker's breakfast show (BBC London) the other morning: Financial Expert David Kuo talked about this launch in the financial news, and Danny immediately came up with a concept for the ad featuring: The Wurzels' cover of Gina G's "Oooh Ahhh, Just a Little Bit", and cartoon berries dancing around, including one in a pair of wrap around sunglasses ("because there's always a cartoon piece of fruit wearing sunglasses")

Has anyone seen any ads? Did Danny Baker second guess the agency?

Comment: I, to my eternal pride, was not even aware that the Wurzels had covered "Oooh Ahhh, Just a Little Bit"

(was it that special "charity single" they did to help farmers that disappeared without a trace?)

Comment: Who was the popstar who was interviewed recently and asked what his favourate London restaurant was? His answer - Nandos.

Comment: Perhaps the Wurzels song was on their covers album, 'Never Mind the Bullocks, Here Come The Wurzels', which also features 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Mulder and Scully'

Comment: Great things about Nando's:

1. You order when you want to by queuing up

2. Bottomless soft drinks and frozen yoghurt

3. Pay up front - no tipping bullshizzle

4. No waiting around for waiters/waitresses

5. The food is most excellent

Comment: yeah I read that somewhere as well Nebbish - it wasn't in Tuesday's "Metro", was it?

(I too am a huge fan, though occasionally return to KFC to see if I can replicate the occasion where a trainee operative took my order and accidentally missed out the "asking for money" stage. The meal was handed over, I said "Thanks very much", and promptly walked out of the shop...)

Comment: Nandos rocks although I reckon they should do an extra extra hot as the extra hot just doesn't do it for me anymore!!

Comment: Extra hot is just right for me. I am unfortunate in that my mates think Nando's is a bit crap, even though I love it. Even for my birthday treat we ended up going for a curry when I wanted to go to Nandos *sniff*

Comment: I tried Oooohh today- much better than the other, although I couldn't work out from the ingredients list what the extra-special cooling additive was- no mention of menthol or sorbitol. Any ideas?

Comment: I've got some Aarghhh here and never was a drink more accurately named - it's absolutely foul. The only experience I can compare it to is drinking artificially sweetened Ribena Light after being violently sick, if that's not too distressing a notion

Comment: ribena aarghh is quite nice till you get the after tase burning in ur troat - low xalorie blackcurrant juice with chill and ginger flavours! ribena oooohh taste like normal ribeba light with a menthal after taste! my local cost cutters also have a mars delight didnt appel to me so i didnt buy one! does any one no which supermarkets have the 3 new double cream bars? and its it true about the diet coke with lime in the uk?

Comment: Ribena AARGH - whoever came up with the idea of mixing Ribena with chillipowder is clearly a freak. It tastes as you'd expect it to. Horrible.

Ribena OOOOHH - Not sure why this was supposed to taste any differently to normal Ribena, although in my defence I was drinking it try and remove the lingering burning sensation produced by AARGH, so my tastebuds weren't functionally properly.

OOOOHH, AARGH RIBENAAA

Comment: It does, Misty! It's that slight bit throat-burny, but more in the manner of, say, turps than any spice.

Comment: I saw a piece of stealth advertising in the "...and finally" bit in METRO - Ribena's offcial taster, Emily Sinburn, (i.e. PR) has suppossedly insured her tongue for UKP 1.1 million.

So if things start going badly, don't expect Ribena Fuuuuuuccck ("with the Extreme Caustic Kick") to get too far out of development...

Comment: Sweet zombie jesus, this drink is horrible - it tastes of Ribena! The only difference is that it has a moderate chilli aftertaste (afterheat?), which is a complete non sequitur. Please do not let these people make any more drinks. Thanks.

Comment: i thought the ribena ooh tasted the same, if you take small fast sips its lethal, i thought the cooling ingredient was something suspicious like anti freeze, although someone assures me its a concoction of peppermint and ribena

Comment: Finally got round to trying these. The Chilli one, if drunk slowly tasted just like the standard stuff, but big slurps brought on a fairly nice burn. I'd be tempted to try this again. The freezing one just left a nasty chemical taste in the back of my throat. The pack says to serve chilled, which seems to not getting the point?

Comment: Tastes like regular Ribena on the initial gulp, but then gives a kick like ginger beer in the back of your throat. A very strange sensation, a bit like a fruity pepper vodka.

Comment: "AARGHH" or whatever this stuff thinks it's called is actually Satan trapped in a carton of Ribena.

No wonder you can't give it to kids.

Somebody call an exorcist!

Comment: bloody hell, i had some of this without noticing the carton saying 'argh to hot to handle' at first i thought it was just a weird taste because i was chewing gum before, but then it really burned me, grrr.. DON'T TRY THIS DRINK...

Comment: If you mix both in the same glass do they neutralise each other to become normal Ribena?
Posted: 11:01 Fri 13-Aug-2004 by Snackspot # permalink comment
Comment: haha excellent point - maybe the whole idea is that you have to keep drinking the other one as the only effective antidote to the one you've just consumed (and then vice-versa), making it theoretically impossible to stop buying the stuff...

Comment: Has anyone had the newest version of Ribena Light, the no-added-sugar stuff? It has a strangely soft, almost creamy mouthfeel- not unpleasant, but not quite normal either. Is it just me that has noticed this?
