Click pic to view comments International sighting: Nestle KitKat Summer Pine/ Caramel Chunky
Posted: 17:24 Mon 22-03-2004. Price: ZAR 3.69. Location: Cape Town, South Africa. Nutritional unusualness: Pineapple juice.
"Peter Robson" reports: Having recently read about KitKat's apparent financial woes and the (related?) appearance of strange KitKat flavours, I just had to try the Summer Pine limited edition bar I found in my supermarket today. Much like the reviewer of the Mint Rush KitKat I was underwhelmed by the flavour. With just a light hint of pineapple, you could imagine that the chocolate had been sitting next to some genuine pineapple sweets on the store shelf and had become cross-contaminated. My friend Jeremy said it tastes like a KitKat pretending to be something else. Personally, I though the flavour was quite pleasant, but it was too subtle to really make the bar stand out as being so different I would seek it out instead of the standard flavour.

...In other KitKat capers - "Nick Hanning" writes from Toronto, where he spent $1.00 Canadian on the Caramel Chunky which he describes as: As sickly sweet as you can imagine. The caramel is encased in its own chocolate section atop what is essentially half a KitKat Chunky, so caramel and wafer do not actually meet. Imagine, if you will, a giant rectangular shaped Rolo merged on top of the bottom half of a regular KitKat Chunky and you get the idea. Nice when you are eating it, but you get the idea pretty quick that this will make you feel nauseous five minutes after finishing it. Your instincts are correct.

Comment: You know, it's only just occurred to me that this might explain the mystery behind the Cadbury "Pine Lime" Freddo (ie: pineapple rather than toilet-fresh "pine" flavour): http://[URL display truncated]

Comment: It was hard to tell precisely, but it could definitely have been a lime/pineapple blend. Fairly horrible either way. Adding flavoured centres to the Australian version of Dairy Milk really seems to screw it up.

Comment: Also, why are Kit Kat releasing "Summer Pine" when it's already autumn in the Southern Hemipshere?

Comment: it's ultra-recent nostalgia for those heady December days, like at the start of "Grease" - "Uh-oh those... Summer Pines"

(Tell me more, tell me more - does it taste like a tree?

Tell me more, tell me more - it's the colour of wee

and so on...)

Comment: I'd like to see more pineapple flavoured snacks actually - I think the snackfood industry hasn't realised the full potential of pineapple.

Nestle missed a trick there too - they should have named it the Aloha Kit Kat (cos Hawaiian = pineapple). And then they could have done ads featuring chicks in grass skirts playing ukeleles, while a surfer dude drops into a wave at Pipeline and then munches on a piece of Aloha Kit Kat after riding the wave to the shore.

Comment: Alert viewers should stand by for my sighting of Cadbury's pineapple-flavoured chocolate, which I bought in a local shop yesterday.

Comment: Stuart, where do you get all your sightings? The jealousy welling up inside me will surely create some sort of snack-hunting hulk (well, the consumption of snack products will help with the size side of things too)

Comment: I remember going on about lime flavoured milkshakes a while back, forgetting that pineapple flavour is just as nice.

Word of warning - do not buy Sainsbury's pineapple flavour high-juice cordial. It has an after taste of cheese. Quite possibly the most disgusting drink I've ever tasted.

Comment: Yeah Sainsburys' coconut and pineapple juice also smells worryingly of cheese. To the point where even diluting it with alcohol wouldn't get rid of the cheese smell.

That aint right. 2312 8 55
