Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Cadbury's Pineapple chocolate bar Confirmed sighting: Cadbury's Pineapple chocolate bar
Posted: 13:36 Mon 29-03-2004. Price: 1.65/ 100g. Location: Cadbury's Cocoashop, Bath. Sub-flavours: Many variants, including Lemon, Blueberry and Lime. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Cadbury's fragmentation of their own market continues apace, with these long, thin Toblerone-ish bars which appear to be sold only in the company's own Cocoashop outlets on the High Streets of posher towns. The "premium" positioning is reflected in the extremely understated packaging and the high price (compared to the recent big-bar launches of Bubbly, Mint Crisp, Turkish etc), as well as the simple construction - this is just straightforward milk chocolate with flavouring, no plebby fondant centres or the like here. Blending dairy with acidic fruits is always a tricky area, and Cadbury's seem to have gone with the "oil" rather than "juice" route, as there's no mention of actual pineapple in the ingredients. Accordingly, the taste is oddly akin to their "Rum and Raisin" bar - a pungent, chocolate-liqueur-esque flavour that bears only a passing resemblance to pineapples, but not unpleasant for that, and probably suited to the adult palate. (My own palate was sadly arrested permanently at the "11-year-old" level by an unfortunate chemical accident many years ago involving an overdose of Space Dust.)

...Tragically, "Stuart" concludes, the shop had "no Lime in stock" when he visited, though he promises - or threatens? - that "frequent checks will be made".

Comment: When I was on a British Airways flight they were selling Cadbury's Sorbet chocolate in Grapefruit, Lemon and Strawberry. They were divine. But apparently exclusive to BA.

Comment: These have been around for a while- you can get them from the on-site shop at Cadburyworld in Birmingham. I've got to take some friends this weekend, I'll see if they've got the lime flavour. Anyone got any orders? :-)

Comment: OK, Well I'm back from the weekend's jaunt and I'm sorry to say that the lime bar was a no-show at the Cadbury World "World's BIGGEST Cadbury Shop!!" as well, so stocks must be vrey low. On the plus side, I tried the manderin version of the fancy-choc and thought it pretty good, better than Cadbury's standard orange milk chocolate which is too sickly for my tastes, and I've also picked up standard sized Cadbury easter eggs with a bag of unboxed chocolate filled chcoclate eggs inside for 50p each, showing the margins they can expect on those things.. Mmm, profitable...

Comment: Found some Lime in the Bath shop yesterday. Nice, but in a blind taste test it'd actually be quite hard to tell apart from the Pineapple. So if you think you might ever find yourself in that scenario, make sure you bring a friend and figure out some secret method of signalling. 14477 7 97
