Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Tayto Fusion Sweet Chilli and Red Peppers Flavour Crisps Confirmed sighting: Tayto Fusion Sweet Chilli and Red Peppers Flavour Crisps
Posted: 10:19 Wed 07-04-2004. Price: 45p. Location: Newsagent near Queen's University, Belfast. Sub-flavours: Roast Beef with Peppercorn Sauce, Roasted Cheese and Mixed Peppercorns, Sweet Chilli and Red Peppers. Nutritional unusualness: Suitable for vegetarians.
"ruthy" reports: Nice enough crisps, if a tad greasy. Have a definite taste of MSG (confirmed by the label). Not very spicy, despite claiming "the flavour of eastern heat". Oh, and like most Tayto crisps, they're made in a castle. Beat that, Walkers.

...Top marks to first-time spotter "ruthy" here for this long-awaited luxury rival to Walkers Sensations, albeit from the makers of Bob The Builder's notoriously Cheesy Tool Bag. Anyway, in other salted salutations: more details continue to leak out, but we're still awaiting a decent pic of those elusive Flamin' Hot Wotsits; The Grocer reports that moves are afoot to bring Chinese Pringles-alike Kracks to the UK (generic "Seafood" flavour, mmm - while the "Cheese" ones are "generously dusted with cheese powder"); and Walkers aren't taking any of this lying down, and are this month unleashing Chargrilled Steak and Peppercorn Sauce Sensations, a totally new range of Poppadom Bites Sensations (in Creamy Chicken Pasandra and Coriander, Cool Yogurt and Mint, and Spicy Tandoori Masala), plus the more "bell-shaped" Doritos Latinos (in Chargrilled BBQ, Mexican Grill, and Sour Cream and Sweet Pepper, complete with their own Smooth Red Pepper and Tomato dip), "made from a different type of maize to offer a slightly lighter eat than standard Doritos".

Comment: i've got a big box of Poppadom Bites and Doritos Latinos on my desk:

Poppadom Bites - not that exciting actually, not got the *quality* feel that other sensations things have

Doritos Latinos - lovely, bit like the much missed 3D ones they used to do, Chargrilled are particularly good

Comment: Just eaten a big bag of barbecue flavour Doritos Latinos. Tasted good to start with, but very sickly towards the end. They're suitable for coeliacs though.

Comment: I love Tayto Fusion's, all flavours but they don't beat the good old Cheese and Onion. Walkers-you cheese and onion will never beat Tayto!

Comment: The Kaptain has been absent for a while due to the undertaking of powerful final examinations in electroknikal engineering. He is now back.

The Kaptain also likes the smooth taste of the Tayto and is keen to spread the word of these delicious krispin snacks. Once when working in the land of Finland the Kaptain imported a selection of Tayto snacks and offered them around to both the Germans and Finns as part of a cultural food exchange festival. They were impressed, so much so in fact that a German fellow was heard to remark 'Hmmmmm, creamy!' as he sampled the krisp for the first time.

Tayto are the king of krispin snack, what other manufacturer produces their wares in a large castle in the rural countryside.

Comment: good to hear from you again K - due to the ground-breaking nature of some of your "experiments", I'd started to fear the worst...

Comment: These Fusion crisps are poor in my opinion. The Sweet Chilli flavour is the best of the three on offer, but the crisps are too small and curly to be properly enjoyed. Beef and Pepper is nothing special, and the Cheese and Pepper is as unappetising as it sounds.

Also mentioned above are the Pringles rivalling crisps-in-a-tube product 'Kracks'. I've had two flaovurs of this product, bought in one of those 'everything a pound' shops that fill most town centres these days. Original, in a yellow tube, was very very salty but at least consumable. Seafood, in a blue tube, smelt and tasted just like a raw fishfinger. Not a pleasant experience at all.

Comment: Oh yes I've seen Kracks in Jack Fultons. I assumed they were just Pringles from a different country, hence a different name.

Comment: Just to add that a fourth flavour of Fusions has surfaced [in Asda]. It's Oriental Chicken and actually tastes quite good in small doses. The bags are silver and black, and the taste is reminiscent of those Walkers Greek Kebab crisps from last summer, kind of half way between roast chicken and a spring roll.

Comment: Had the beef and peppercorn Fusions. Horrid, tasted like the oil had gone off, but saw Kid Carpet who was great.
