Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Special K Lite Bites Confirmed sighting: Special K Lite Bites
Posted: 10:59 Tue 13-04-2004. Price: 1.99 for 6 x multipack. Location: Sainsbury's, Peterborough. Sub-flavours: Sundried Tomato and Basil, Cheese Trio, Tikka. Nutritional unusualness: The usual suspects in snacks, MSG etc.
"Alflavor" reports: After two years in development these are Kellogg's first foray into the savoury snacks market. Should be found down the snack aisle, but these were with the cereals and bars!! The snack's a light extruded corn and rice pillow, and is fat controlled to below 8%. All in good pretty good flavours, and actually quite moreish and filling for a low fat snack!!

...To be honest, I wasn't too sure about these flavours - Tikka and Sundried Tomato were a bit insipid, while the Cheese flavouring was a bit patchy in the packet I had (and also generally not strong enough). But I couldn't agree more with "Alflavor" regarding their position in Sainsbury's (with the other cereal bar spinoffs!!), a basic error in what I believe is called "category management" - also threatening to confuse consumers currently seeking Robinsons Squash For Milk, which is grouped with the other Robinsons' squashes, not with the other milk flavourings like Crusha and Nesquik. Also not filling me up between meals at the moment are Thai Bites-alike McVitie's Go Ahead Chilli and Lime Flavour Crispy Rice Crackers, and Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn Mini Cakes (about 85p for giant 99g bag in Sainsbury's, made by US food giant ConAgra, in Caramel and Sour Cream and Onion only).

Comment: Safeway on the Basingstoke Rd, Reading had these with the 'breakfast' bars. For once I managed to resist, and left them on the shelf. As my eyes wandered along the shelves I spied the new pop-tarts - now in 8 packs. Yum Yum.

Comment: Only tried the Tikka variety so far - great, heartily recommended. Found as part of a six-pack on a non-category specific aisle-end unit in my local Morrisons

Comment: tried all three flavours today, suprisingly for the low-fat snacky things popping up all over the place, these ones actually have lots of flavour and a non too disturbing texture. i could quite easily choose these over a normal bag of crisps any day. the confusion of product placement was overcome by having them at the checkout, hence the impulse buying of all three flavours heh

Comment: Must agree these "lite" snacks are very tasty and good value for money - there are loads in a pack.

At 2g fat per pack that's about half the fat of Thai Bites. Nicer tasting too although the guys in my office said the Cheese flavour was really smelly.

Comment: My boss sent me a whole complimentary box of these bad boys this morning. I've just finished a packet of sundried tomato and basil flavour, not only are they dripping in flavour, but because they're so low in fat I have to consume four times as much to uphold the spare tyre of the web designer. Hooray!

Comment: Well. There was a burst bag of these in the shop. I picked one up, sniffed it and crushed it between my fingers. I wasn't impressed, so that's saved me buying them. They seemed to have a nasty crisp texture; like those horrid processed corn snack things I remember from the 80s.

Comment: Absolutely delicious. Have only tried the Tikka ones so far but they are lovely. The texture is crisp and they're full of flavour (perhaps the only downfall being that the flavouring may stain your fingers if you eat too many!) Recommend these heartily although like the other snacks, they're not cheap.

Comment: This will be yet abother legal battle for the original K and the K Lite. The K Lite network has so many viruses.

Comment: Well, what can i say, these are disgusting. After bringing myself to try one, after my nose detected the far from tolerable reek upon opening the packet, i found the texture to be that of pot pouri.

Comment: Christine - i get mine in Tescos in Dungannon. Im not keen on sundried tomato or tikke, bu the salt and vinegar variety are lovely... they have immense flavour... its making my mouth water thinking about them! 13292 4 49
