Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Magnum Intense/ Australian Illicit Vodka Cranberry Magnum "Vice Cream" Confirmed sighting: Magnum Intense/ Australian Illicit Vodka Cranberry Magnum "Vice Cream"
Posted: 11:09 Thu 15-04-2004. Price: 1.20. Location: Wellfield Road, Cardiff. Sub-flavours: Another Australian one with Kahlua in it, possibly. Nutritional unusualness: Truffle core.
You've got to ask yourself if you feel lucky, as this double-barreled helping of "possibly the most powerful ice-cream in the world" kicks off with "elmsyrup" on the UK Magnum Intense: The truffle inside is really nice, actually. Top quality ice cream as ever. But I always find Magnums make me feel sick. Too big, and this one's even richer. Do you think Magnums are aimed more at men or women? Their chunkiness makes me think the former.

...Then "Paul" further fuels the "target market" mystery with an international sighting of this followup to last year's Magnum Sixties Nine: Fresh off the controversy with Kahlua- and Tia Maria-flavoured Tim Tam biscuits, Australian consumers can now have vodka FLAVOURED (no actual alcohol, sorry) Magnum Ice Creams. The usual suspects are in a tizz about the potential corruption of our youth, of course, but that doesn't change the fact that this vodka/ cranberry ice cream is bloody nice. The cranberry white chocolate shell is a lurid pink I haven't seen outside of classmates' tube socks in the 1980s (good picture here); the inside is fairly normal vanilla ice cream with vodka/ cranberry flavoured sauce swirled through. It really does taste rather like vodka, and the cranberry is a nice touch, though (surprisingly) I think I'd prefer it a little less sweet and a little more tart. It's a bit of a novelty effort - I can't imagine wanting one every day, but it's a nice enough treat.

Comment: God that cranberry and vodka magnum looks fantastic. I'd emigrate to Australia if it wasn't for all the poisonous monsters.

Comment: Magnums are aimed at women aged 18-35 as are the Arnotts Kahlua and Tia Maria biscuits. Can't imagine cranberry magnum will be too successful due the lack of preference for this fruit flavour on Aussie palate - too tarte.

Comment: Phhht. Poisonous monsters?

NO MORE THAN 80% of the monsters in Australia are poisonous.

What a beat-up.

Comment: By the way I've seen a low fat 'Magnum Light' in the same shop. BF unimpressed with idea of buying it.

Comment: I happened across a Magnum Cranberry and Vodka last night at the petrol station here in glorious Sydney and took it home. Unwrapping it I was initially startled by the lurid almost beetroot colour of the 'chocolate' coating. Very off-putting. The chocolate seemed to have virtually no taste - certainly not tasting of vodka or cranberry in any strength. After i'd eaten away the coating in my typically surgical manner I noted that the ice-cream was rippled with milimetre thin concentric rings of what might have been cranberry flavouring. The icecream did taste far more satisfactory than the 'chocolate' - a slight cranberry tartness nicely offset by the sweet, luscious creaminess of the ice-cream. However I could not taste anything at all reminiscent of vodka (and of course there is no vodka in it), and the packaging claimed 3% cranberry juice, so that is pretty minimal too. All in all, not bad (apart from the shocking vivid 'chocolate' colour), but not something i'd rush back to buy again.

Comment: there's some mini magnums in my mum's fridge, but my memories of vodka make me too frightened to touch them.

but if kiddies are going to go nuts on vodka after eating one of these, what about rum'n'rasion ice cream? and i know kahlua ice cream has been available for for over a year now.

i also agree with paul about our australian monters, and if one of them bites/stings you, you're mostly fine if you see a doctor within an hour (and you know what attacked you). so quit ya moaning!

Comment: I don't get it!!!!

Is it just me, or has nobody else cottoned on to the fact that vodka has no (or very little) taste - so how can something be "vodka flavoured"????

Comment: well, it's always seemed to me that people who drink vodka & cranberry or (more commonly) vodka & raspberry in a bar don't really care about the taste of vodka anyway - it's just something that doesn't taste like alcohol, but is nice and sweet and gets them pi**ed.

Comment: OK I have just had a Magnum Intense (on a stick, as they seem to do it in pots as well these days). And I was really impressed, the truffle is fantastic. Have to agree that I couldnt eat a whole one though. If only they bought out mini ones like they did for the 7 sins last year.
