Posted: 12:40 Tue 20-04-2004. Price: $0.80. Location: Grand Central Station, New York. Sub-flavours: Normal ones. Nutritional unusualness: Black and white chocolates.
"Diarmuid Mallon" reports: Spotted whilst my partner was buying a carton of cancer sticks, before sampling the delights of the Oyster bar (following by Junior's for the cheesecake!) See Classic American Candy Will Go Completely Colorless in the New Year for details. Tasted much like regular M and Ms with no difference in taste between the black or white ones. Managed to save the pack a whole day (long enough to take the photo) before munching them whilst watching Magic Brian in Central Park.

...Another glimpse of "Diarmuid's" Sex And The City-esque lifestyle there, providing us with much-needed confirmation of a product previously poetically described by McSweeney's with these words: "I lean my face against the cool window and look out on the chunks of ice floating in the Hudson River. They are gray. The snow in Battery Park is gray. Tomorrow, I will buy Skittles." McSweeney's additionally deliver their unique perspective on "Pringlesque spill of chocolate" Hershey's Swoops ("best served with a personal signature move"), while fans of the UK's own Ultimate Creme Egg ("Ultimate" as in "last you'll ever eat"?), may also enjoy the Soft-Boiled Egg Cake devised by yet another Gotham gourmet.

Comment: I was going to call you a scab for going to the Oyster Bar, but it seems the strike is over http://www.crainsny.com/news.cms?newsId=7633

I'm just jealous anyway. I was meant to be on holiday in NY last week, but it fell through and I ended up spending a week in Bradford.

Comment: Only found out about the strike after visiting, but luckily it was over. Saw the Hershey's Swoops everywhere, although Chocolate Pringles would be a better name. If only the Hershey's chocolate didn't taste so bad. I did read an article that explain why American Chocolate tastes like it does, and why English Chocolate tastes as it does. However I can't remember any of it!

Comment: i thought i read something about american chocolate being made with sour milk (buttermilk?) cause that's the way they like it... i wonder if there's regional variations due to their potential climate differences?

Comment: i'm from chicago and these 'help find the colors' M&M's have been available for many months in all the varieties; the company has already moved on to a newer look for their regular wrappers...

Comment: Heads up, there's black and white M&M's in Australia now, though the promotion is different from the one in the USA. I'm hoping against hope that they're not out here as a way for Mars to get rid of the product that was left over from said USA promotion.
