Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Fruit-Tella Strawberry Mix Confirmed sighting: Fruit-Tella Strawberry Mix
Posted: 19:18 Sat 01-05-2004. Price: 99p/ 200g bag. Location: Martin's, Midsomer Norton. Sub-flavours: Summer fruits mix, and allegedly a "cream" mix, as yet unseen. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Part of the big new Fruit-Tellas push, this "mix" of strawberry FTs contains just two varieties - the standard strawberry, and one in a darker wrapper which has tiny little almost-invisible flecks of fruit in it. In a blind test, involving shutting my eyes and juggling one of each around in my hands then unwrapping and eating one at random with my eyes still closed, I was totally unable to tell them apart. So, at the end of the day, it's a big bag of strawberry Fruit-Tellas. The summer-fruits mix is more interesting, containing all the flavours found in the normal standard packs plus the ones from the "English garden fruits" variety - so you get redcurrant, pear and blackberry in addition to the orange, strawberry and lemon. And apple too. Possibly also blackcurrant. I can't remember, I've eaten them all.

...Top marks there to "Stuart", not least for passing on what now appears to be the official spelling of "Fruit-Tella" (though you occasionally also see it with the hyphen replaced by a piece of fruit?). In other fructose frolics: Independent Retail News reports that Masterfoods are launching Skittles flavoured chewing gum in the middle of June (five fruit flavours, 35p), while today's issue of The Grocer contains an ad revealing that luxury breadmakers Warburtons will be adding a Summer Fruit Loaf with Strawberry to their existing range of Fruited Loaves and Buns (and if it's half as tasty as their worth-every-penny 800g Seeded Batch Loaf, no doubt I'll be eating the new one at virtually every other mealtime as well).

Comment: I'm always a bit dubious about these sites - you've got to assume they're aimed at getting kids (or lollipop-loving adults) to sign up for a lifetime of email spam - but has anyone had any good experiences with them?

Comment: fwiw, you also get free sweets if you order stuff from firebox.com (and, ultimately, a house full of pointless man-toys)

Comment: Eek! I've had that Warburton's summer loaf with strawberry (reduced to 30p) but I didn't realise you were still awaiting a sighting, or I would have taken a picture. Anyway it was very nice, the strawberry pieces were semi-dried making them chewy (but softer than 'fruit leather'). And the raisins were plump and tender. Good enough to eat without butter. However there was a rather strong off-putting artificial smell .

Comment: I doubt it - Masterfoods UK told me that they did consumer survey thingies and found that there was no demand for them in the UK.
