Confirmed sighting: HP Hot and Spicy sauce
Posted: 08:27 Thu 06-05-2004. Price: £1.49/ 425g. Location: Asda, Longwell Green. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Lea and Perrins Tomato and Worcester Table Sauce is the finest brown-type sauce currently available to UK consumers, but frighteningly-priced at up to £2 for a 325g bottle, so the canny snack spotter is always on the lookout for an alternative. This isn't it, sadly. Billed as being HP with extra chillies, this does, to be fair, live up to that billing. It tastes exactly like normal HP until 0.75 seconds after hitting your tongue, at which point the 10% caustic soda that's apparently been added to the recipe flares into action and leaves you dashing around frantically for the nearest glass of cold milk/ container of Halon gas/ sharp pair of scissors. Violently aggressive without adding anything to the taste, this is worth avoiding. Come to think about it, it's pretty ironic that they're called "chillies", isn't it?
..."Stuart" at last sates our curiosity over the ideal accompaniment to a box of Bernard Matthews Microwaveable Nuggets - here's hoping the chilli sauce effect is less prevalent in Walkers' latest limited edition Tomato and Basil, Feta Cheese and Greek Kebab "Mediterranean flavours", apparently already spotted by "bob" (in his local "Pepsi Pink" stockist) but on sale to the rest of us at around the end of May.

Comment: Incidentally, Heinz range of "Eazy Squirt" sauces is being discontinued, and hence cleared out at bargain prices in many stores. I recommend picking up a stock of the lovely sweet'n'sour variety, especially if you want to make my Peter Baynham tribute recipe, "Stu's Lazy Stir Fry Sweet'n'Sour Chicken", which involves getting some pre-cooked diced chicken from Iceland or the like, squirting the sauce over it (and, if you have dinner-party guests, throwing in some pineapple chunks) then microwaving it for two minutes. Delicious.

Comment: The Kaptain is also a fan of 'lazy cooking' and practices it often.
Once upon returning from several hours of vigourous cycling and suffering from the tumble rumbles and shake-a-shakes, the Kaptain headed to the fridginator in search of foodensnack. However opening the door the Kaptain found nothing but a bowl of cold pasta from the night before.
The hunger was in the Kaptain though and he could not wait for some sort of cooking process to complete, instead he took a variety of sauce bottles from the cupboard and laid them out on the table in front of himself along with the pasta dish. A hearty meal was then eaten by taking a mouthful of cold pasta, followed by a squirt of saucing sauce into his mouth held open wide. Using this technique the Kaptain had a delicious, quick and varied meal through the used of multiple sauces.
These Heinz squirters will be ideal, the Kaptain must now go and stock up.
