Posted: 13:00 Wed 12-05-2004. Price: 99p/ 49p. Location: Londis, Catford, London/ Londis, Dury Lane, London. Nutritional unusualness: (Irish Moss) Contains less than 2 percent of the (US) RDA of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavon, Niacin, Calcium and Iron.
One seamless Photoshopping later, and it's a heady cocktail of Londis liquid nuttiness today, kicking off with "Adam Page" on Jamaican Irish Moss Peanut Flavoured Drink: The ingredients list is a voyage of discovery. "Irish moss" is a seaweed rather than a plant found in a peat bog. I assume there is a comma missing from "Peanut butter corn syrup solids". "Casein". "Carrageenan" is a thickener derived from red seaweed suspected of causing stomach lesions acording to a website of unknown reliability. Tastes of peanuts with an odd aftertaste. The can states "Shake well before opening" in large capital letters. Also available in vanilla. At 99p a can from a shop in Catford I won't be buying it again soon.

...Not your cup of tea? Here's "BobBobbins" with his analysis of Lo Lo Almond Juice (from a can mysteriously marked "Heating temperature < 80C"): Found in the chiller cabinet, though the packaging helpfully tells you that it should be "Kept at normal temperature". Also that it's "A nutritious and healthy drink. Enjoy a good drink for your mind and body." Made in China. Lists ingredients as "Water, Almond, Sugar". That's it. Overjoyed by this nutritional simplicity, and wondering how you juice an almond, I decide to try it cold, and discover, despite a lovely smell of marzipan, it tastes of soap. With a hint of marzipan. Heating it doesn't seem to make a difference. Might make a nice bubble bath though.

Comment: Ahh... childhood memories of eat a bag of Dulce at the sea-front, Donaghadee. However, as a drink, what were they thinking!

Comment: I used to love Irish Moss when I was a kid. It's like a more challenging version of Dunn's River Nurishment - which is the nectar of the gods, incidently.

Comment: They both sound disgusting! Mind you. had an Indian meal the other night and the complimentary wine they served after the meal could have been either (or both) of those.

Comment: The almond one sounds like heavily-sweetened almond milk. Haven't tried almond milk with my soymilk maker yet, but the cashew nut milk I made did taste a little soapy until I piled in half a jar of reduced-fat chocolate granules, at which point it made a reasonable hot chocolate. The little one even drank it.

Comment: Next time in Barbados try the seamoss drink produced by Lovemore Juices. I never care much for the drink until someone insisted that I try a sample. Since then it's now amongst my favourite drinks. 64835 8 03

Comment: I drank this the other day and thought it wasn't too bad. It was pretty think but yeah, all in all, not bad. After reading the comments here though I probably wont be buying it again. Not that I'm easily influenced or anything.
