Confirmed sighting: Marvel Snerdles
Posted: 10:26 Mon 17-05-2004. Price: 39p. Location: Morrisons, Cribbs Causeway. Sub-flavours: Spiderman and Hulk "flavours".
"Stuart Campbell" reports: These have to be the most artistically-appealing sweets since Juicy Drop Pops. What you get is a fruity chew bar most closely related to the Fruit Winders genre, which tastes (in Spiderman's case) of strawberry despite the only real fruit involved being pear. The bar is then covered in a pebbledashing of little sugar balls in a variety of colours to make up the face of popular comic-book superheroes. On peeling off the intriguing double wrapping, you get a very juicy chew with little crunchy bits, which actually manages to taste almost as impressive as it looks. I'll definitely be looking for these in stockists that aren't 25 miles away. Or buying more than one next time I'm passing through.
...This appears to be a (Swizzels Matlow?) version of a US product that also features the official "Candy Decorated Fruit Snacks" of Daredevil and Wolverine (possibly in some sort of pun on the phrase "Marvel Candy Comic Strip"). In other pink-flavoured news: The Grocer reports that London microbrewery Meantime have launched a Strawberry complement to their Chocolate Lager (apparently now a Sainsbury's "permanent line"), and that Tesco have created a satsuma-sized giant strawberry "at top-secret locations in southern Spain". Nicknamed the "Scarlett Johansson" (after "the tasty Hollywood actress"), there is no word on whether it will now be advertised by Benicio Del Toro tucking into a punnet in a lift.

Comment: I've got a Hulk snerdle bar and half eaten Spidey one. I can say it's one of the most artificial things I've ever eaten. And I once ate a styrofoam cup.

Comment: They are fantastic, the only place I've seen them so far is Woolworths. Do you think that Willy Wonka got paid to use his nerds on 'em? i've only seen hulk and spidey, but i think they both come in strawberry and grape.

Comment: I discovered Snerdles not in a normal store or anything, but in a wholesaler, Bookers. And became addicted. They're so so SO DAMNED GOOD. My (equally dorky) housemates and I buy them in boses of 48. Never seen them anywhere else. If anyone's truely gagging for nerdy Marvel candy, drop me a line at kaliphalinden (at!) hotmail . com, and I'll gladly ship the boxes out. Lest anyone think I'm trying to con people, I'll do it via a buy-it-now ebay auction. LONG LIVE SNERDLES!
