Posted: 10:40 Wed 19-05-2004. Price: 89p for 54g box. Location: Boots, Sheffield. Sub-flavours: Strawberry and yoghurt flavour. Nutritional unusualness: 63% of your RDA for calcium and vitamins B, C and E per box.
"charl" reports: These look like standard two-tone Fruit-tellas but have a slightly gritty texture. They were generally considered "not that bad" round the office, but laughably expensive and a very unhealthy way to get your vitamins.

..."Stuart Campbell" was no more inspired by Fruitella's Juice Wave bars (15p, Martin's, Midsomer Norton), commenting "EXCITING TRUE FACT - Martin's newsagents used to be known as RS McColl's, and were named after a player from Scottish amateur football club Queen's Park in, I think, the late 19th Century. I mention this because Juice Wave bars are pretty much what you'd expect, ie some Fruit-Tellas hammered flat, except they've also got some speckly bits of fruit and pulp in them, which makes them taste a little juicier than normal FTs, at the cost of a slightly nasty gritty texture. In the end, the latter characteristic overpowers the former - you'd be better off with a normal packet of Fruit-Tellas", saving his highest praise for Matlow's rival Zingy Lime Giant Refresher bar (10p, Pound shop, Kingswood): In the wake of the gorgeous Strawberry Refreshers chews, I approached this new flavour with a nervous optimism, and was well rewarded. This may be the tastiest lime-flavour sweet currently available to the British public - the same creamy juiciness as the strawberry chews, a sharp lime tang, and a prominent fizzy lemon centre all combine into a gorgeous whole that tastes as good as you remember sweets doing when you were 10. The only drawback is that it's only available so far in bar form, which is difficult to eat as a grown-up without attracting strange looks in public, but that - and 10p - is a small price to pay for something this good.

Comment: I salute Stuart's bravery in pursuit of snack spotting. ITV has documentary series on those Midsomers places, and boy do they look dangerous. Every week 6 or so people are murdered for having the wrong hanging baskets or something.

Comment: Fruittella Plus - now in the bargain bin at your local Boots. They lasted a long time didn't they!? Not really surprising at that price! 3816 0 55
