Posted: 23:55 Thu 10-06-2004. Location: Tesco Southampton. Sub-flavours: Milk, Plain. Nutritional unusualness: 1% more chocolate!.
Sorry, I left these two sightings in the sun for a couple of days and, mmm, now they're all stuck together - "choccieman" reports: I am returned from the land obsessed with peanut butter :) Saw these in Tesco's along with Cadbury's new Fruit Digestives (where "fruit" = burnt tasting currants). As for the McVitie's, the "1% more chocolate" is really a covering tactic to hide the removal of trans fats and also lower the salt content in their biccies. After a highly un-scientific discussion and taste testing at work we've concluded that the new ones don't taste as good although there is very little difference. We're thinking that 0.05g less salt per 100g is the main factor. Hopefully not all ex-transfat products will be "improved" in this manner (and I'm frankly terrified at the idea of these low-carb choc bars).

...Not a huge amount of action in the choccy biccy market at the moment (it being the height of summer and all), though The Grocer has reported that Fox's are adding Chocolate Fudge and Raspberry and Triple Chocolate to their Creations range and, at the slightly less delicate end of the market, haulage giant Eddie Stobart is launching a range of branded oat-based Trucker Bars in Cherry and Sultana, "Original", and Chocolate Chip (from 89p for 100g).

Comment: i can't wait for low carb choccie bars! it's going to be entertaining when people buy them by mistake and experience the laxative effects of polyols inadvertently. seriously, how are they going to package them to retain the original product identity, but minimise accidental purchases (which will surely lead to complaints rather than repeat purchases from accidental buyers)?

Comment: Saw a poster advertising these at local sainsburys.

It said that there is now 'more of the yummy bit'.

This made me laugh, it implies that the chocolate is yummy and the biscuit isn't!!

Reminded me of new soap powder adverts when the old version suddenly becomes crap and unable to remove stains, but the new improved one does, do they think we're stupid?!

Comment: "do they think we're stupid?!"

Yes, yes they do. Their utter contempt for us is the basis for all marketing.
