Posted: 11:34 Wed 23-06-2004. Price: 99p. Location: Home Bargains, Pontefract. Nutritional unusualness: Contains "Red #40" and "Blue #1" (sounds like a football score).
"Phillerena" reports: "What fresh madness?", I hear you ask. Indeed. I found these "Purple coloured crisps" in Home Bargains, one of those shops that sell odd products that are either a) foreign, b) soon to be released, or c) never released at all, so need to be binned off onto the single mums with 50 children who shop there. I'm not sure if I was expecting these to taste "purple" or what, but when the novelty is stripped away, you discover that they are just regular, boring Pringles that are "coloured" purple. They do taste different though - they have less of a "lardy" taste than the regular Pringles, and are a bit crisper. They come in 8 little beak-shaped pots, each one with the message "Happy Easter!" on the front, so who knows how old these are. They originate from Ohio, and inform us that they are "not a significant source of sugars, vitamin A, calcium and iron". Odd, very odd. Only to be bought if you fancy weird-looking but normal-tasting Pringles.

..."Phillerena" here stumbles across a variant that not even international Pringles playboy "Marc" appears aware of, though the latter seems happy enough with the Wisconsin White Cheddar Pringles he recently paid $1.79 for in Las Vegas, commenting: Not being a fan of cheese-flavored Pringles (Cheezums, "now even Cheesier" - yuk!), I expected something hideous. But actually, this tastes just PERFECT! It's a very mild, well balanced cheddar-ish flavor. Procter & Gamble must've known they had a winner in their hands, as they promptly put these crisps in a KING CAN! Unfortunately this means a mere SIX grams more than what we are used to in Europe. Aw, you know how Americans can exaggerate...

Comment: Less lardy - that's a real bonus, Pringles are disgustingly fatty tasting.

Comment: I did a quick google on the Purple Pringles and all I could find were a few blogs that briefly mentioned them. I think they must have been a USA Easter-release gone wrong.

Comment: Do they still sell them? Last time I was at Home Bargains they had sold out of purple pringles, so they didn't last very long. 87397 9 61
