Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Planters Nutcases Confirmed sighting: Planters Nutcases
Posted: 23:27 Thu 08-Jul-2004. Price: 19p for 50g. Location: Home Bargains, Pontefract. Sub-flavours: Thai Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt and Malt, Sour Cream and Jalapeno. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Phillerena" reports: At last, the birth of a new "pub snack". A crisp meets peanut hybrid! That is essentially what these are - peanuts with a crispy savoury shell, almost similar to Peanut M and M's. Planters boast that they are "Mad about nuts!" and that Nutcases are "an unbeatable taste sensation". On first bite you get a crunch, then you bite into peanut. It's an odd texture, going from a "crisp" crunch to a "soft" peanut-bite. I picked up Sweet Chilli flavour, which is OK, but has a creamy curry sort of taste which doesn't really fit with a savoury snack. I'll be sure to pick up a more savoury variety if I ever buy these again. It says "Quality U.S.A" on the side, so it appears that these are not a concept born of the UK pub-culture. Still, these do have huge potential in the smoke-filled world of the Beer Belly.

...News coverage claims these have been "specifically designed to meet consumer demand for a new, lighter-eating snack", though they sound suspiciously like the limited edition Walkers Sensations Nut Clusters to me. In another legume latest: the reassuringly Australian-sounding Mayver's brand is being promoted in trade ads as "The UK's First Peanut Butter with Omega-3 [oil]. And research shows that your customers want to buy it now!" - presumably established by asking punters "If there was a 'healthy' peanut butter you could eat instead of fish, would you buy it?", no doubt met with a resounding "Sure, why not?".

Comment: These have been around for ages- not by Planters but in other versions. I used to love the Phileas Fogg ones in the 80s but then they disappeared. Still, good to know.

Comment: BRING BACK THE 'NUTTY' bar. The nearest thing to it is Hershey's PayDay peanut caramel bar. Why take 'Nutty' off the market if PayDay is thriving in the States? Bring Back 'Nutty' now. I'm addicted and I can no longer afford the flights to USA to get any more PayDays. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. I'm down to my last 3 'PayDays'. I'd much prefer a 'Nutty' though. Please, please do something. Thank you for reading this message. Anna aged nearly 34 years young. P.S. I have sent a similar request to Cadbury as I can no longer remember who manufactured 'Nutty'. It's been so many years since I last had one, but I shall never forget them as long as I live. I'm Nutty about 'Nutty'!

Comment: Planter's Nutcases are not unique!!!!!!! KP did a similar version a few years ago, and they have been serving Cocktail Peanuts - roasted peanuts in a crispy savoury shell - for years in Holland and Germany. As a small child visiting my grandparents in Holland I can remember them being served at parties!!!! You can get the authentic version in either paprika or cheese and ham flavour in branches of LIDL stores!!!!

Comment: I just came across an old VHS tape with the original PB Crisp commercial from 1992. It had a catchy little theme song, "PB Crisp! PB Crisp! PB Crisp!" I was suddenly reminded of how awesome they were. One of these days, I'll put the commercial online for download.

And thank you, Sarah. I'll definitely call or write to Planters about bringing PB Crisp back.

Comment: Never heard of PB crisps - what were they like?

I used to like XL crisps - i saw some in a newsagent about a year ago - dtill in see through bags! you could only get them in beefy and cheesy flavour!

What happened to Roysters crisps? and those Brannigans in brown papery packs - we used to sell them in the pub i worked in about 7 years ago - they did a mean pickle flavour one and i used to 'accidentally' tear the bags when putting them on display as the landlord let us eat any 'damaged' packs! Anyone else remember them?
