Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Whitworth Sunny Raisin Nuggets/ Sundora Real Fruit Bars Confirmed sighting: Whitworth Sunny Raisin Nuggets/ Sundora Real Fruit Bars
Posted: 11:35 Mon 12-Jul-2004. Price: (Nuggets) 1.79/ 6 x 30g packs. Location: Somerfield, Kingswood. Sub-flavours: (Nuggets) Chocolate, Rainbow Fruits, Strawberry Fizzers, two of each. Nutritional unusualness: See below.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: There have been quite a few attempts made in one way or another to turn raisins from a fruit (and an unappetising-looking wrinkly one at that) into a sweet, and hence appeal to the kiddie market, and for the sake of the nation's youth and their fat-clogged intestines, it's to be hoped one of them will one day succeed. Sunny Raisin Nuggets have possibly the best hopes yet, and justifiably so. Street buzzwords in the name ("Sunny", "Nuggets")? Check. Baseball cap-wearing, thumbs-aloft cartoon mascot? Check. Wacky flavours (fizzy strawberry raisins)? Check. Chocolate? Check. Pack that turns into a hand puppet? Check. (Though the packaging perhaps rather overplays this feature, as the "puppet" you end up with is just a plastic bag with a lot of nutritional information on it where the character's body and legs should be.)

...Please View comments for "Stuart's" full verdict on this archive sighting from a while back, which I was reminded of after seeing them in the Royal Oak Budgens, along with Whitworths' Wow/ The Mix tubs and Apricot with a dash of Peach Schnapps Fruit Tempters. Strangest fruit product of the year, however, remains these Sundora Real Fruit Bars (30K jpeg, 39p/ 35g, Sainsbury's), whose compressed all-fruit composition basically makes them look like a pooh - especially in the Mixed Raisins variety, which a friend of mine described as "complete with creases from your colon".

Comment: Best of all, though, they're just great. The chocolate-coated raisins are a classic standard, the strawberry fizzers - weakest of the three varieties - are both strawberry-tasting and (mildly) fizzy, but the "rainbow raisins" (orange, lemon, blackberry, raspberry and tropical-flavoured yoghurty coatings) are absolutely delicious - sweet and fruity with each flavour appreciably different. 30p per tiny bag might be pushing it a little, but hopefully not - these deserve an audience.

Comment: The horror, the horror!

The Kaptain spys the kharacter on the front of the 'Sunny Raisin Nuggets' wrappage and acknowledges him as an imposter!

The original and true Raisin mascotios were the California Raisins. Not only a marketing ploy but also a successful animated music band. The Kaptain in his younger days often enjoyed sitting down in front of the TV box to watch this fine entertainment programming.

The Kaptain supplies a linking link:

The Kaptain can only suggest one punishment for this baseball cap wearing imposter. This false raisin should be burnt over a Bunsen burner below a flask of water to determine his kalorific kontent, education and punishment in one entertaining visual showtime.
