Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Cadbury Rum and Raisin bar Confirmed sighting: Cadbury Rum and Raisin bar
Posted: 17:05 Tue 27-Jul-2004. Price: 50p/ 100g bar. Location: Pound shop, Kingswood. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: I wouldn't normally have gone into this particular shop, but after travelling several miles only to fail to buy either Golden Wonder Sausage and Tomato crisps or Basil Brush Chicken Boom Booms from my usual dealers, I was keen to find something to make the trip worthwhile and got lucky. Following on from the exciting Banoffee bar, here's another Cadbury's variety seemingly just for the dedicated snack spotters who frequent the nation's "everything for a quid" outlets. Rum and Raisin was a popular flavour for things in the 1970s, but seems to have died out with the end of punk, though possibly unconnectedly. Cadbury's have taken the first step in bringing it to life again, and have held nothing back - the rum flavour is powerful and eye-watering at first bite, but is slowly overcome as the chocolate melts in your mouth, and the raisins are juicy and plentiful. Boozy sweets are an acquired taste, and not my personal favourites, but this isn't bad at all. One for the ladies, probably.

...Sorry, another "classic" sighting from a few months back here, which I was reminded of by the news that Green and Black's are adding Espresso, Ginger and Butterscotch flavours to their "Luxury" chocolate bar range (2.49/ 150g), while Nestle will be making their famously dull chocolate available as generic "Blue Label" bars (Milk and Fruit And Nut) from August, at 79p for 200g, 50p less than the equivalent from Cadbury.

Comment: This reminds me, I found a Dairy Milk with Almonds bar in Home Bargains the other day. Didn't buy it though as I had spent my chocolate allowance on other things. Is it rare or has it been out before?

Comment: Ooh also, regarding the Nestle Milk Chocolate, I have seen that in Jack Fultons (I think it's the same). It just said Milk Chocolate and had the Nestle logo on it, and yes, it was a blue wrapper. I thought it was odd at the time cos I thought Nestle only made Double Cream and Yorkie milk chocolate bars.

Comment: Where can I get the exciting Cadburys Banoffee bar? I went to Farmfoods in Filton but there was nothing of interest at all :o(

Comment: Rum and Raisin chocolate rocks. I used to buy those Cadbury's bars, can't remember what they were called, but they were orangey red and had a ship on them. Old Jamaica or something.

Rum and raisin ice cream is the best ice cream commonly available in the UK. However, I noticed on a recent trip to France that watermelon is a popular flavour over there. And gorgeous it was too. We need more watermelon sweets, if only because the fruit itself is too big to eat before it starts to rot and collapse in on itself like a dying star.

Comment: "Sandy" - maybe Farmfoods keeps them behind the counter for their "special" customers, if you know what I mean...

Comment: What are you saying? I am not "special" enough! I went to a different Farmfoods today and that was rubbish too. I think someone here must have shares in farmfoods or something as is trying to get people in there with made up stories of lovely goodies that don't exist...

Comment: Sandy farmfoods did have cadbury bonoffee and toffee bars, but once they have a products it does not mean they are going to have it again!

Comment: Cadbury's Banoffee was in Farmfoods last Autumn, and with shops like that they usually sell clearance things which don't last forever. They once had Milky Bar with Cookies, but that has since gone.

Comment: It's a shame it sounds really yummy! Still I did get Marabou Mint Choko today from Ikea and these are gorgeous! Like rolos but with a runny mint caramel filling. About the nearest you can get to Cadburys Peppermint Roll you can get from either Cybercandy or Oz. Highly recommended!

Comment: But that's just... normal biscuits. They've simply given them a fancy name, which I do NOT approve of.

Comment: We used to have a version of Caramilk, years ago... ours was a combination of white chocolate and caramel blended together to create a totally delicious chocolate. Sadly, it was discontinued.

Comment: Pay no attention to the product list on Cadbury's Australian website, it's really outdated. I've contacted them a number of time asking why they never include their new products or delete the old ones and never get a response. Be assured, Old Gold Rum & Raisin is alive and well in Australia.

Comment: Cadbury (UK) claim that Old Jamaica is discontinued. Official. Shame, 'cos I was addicted to it. My local inependently-run mini-mart have recently stocked a variant, 'Rum and Raisin' but this is normally for export only to the eastern European market. Not bad, but the chocolate was not quite as dark as in Old Jamaica. Now, here's one for you. Anyone remember Cadbury's Sunfruit in the mid-late '80s? It was identical in size and shape to a Caramel, but the wrapper was pink (with burgundy italic writing) and the filling was a slightly chewy crystallized dried currant pulp. The bizarre thing is, Cadbury deny ever having made it, so if you do remember it, email Charlie at Customer Relations and tell him. I used to buy one from the kiosk on London's Cannon Street station nearly every day!

Comment: These companies are always denying making products, what's wrong with them? Cadbury UK denied making the Banoffi chocolate bar when I emailed them about it, but they said it's something they may consider in the future.

Comment: > Is it really discontinued?

Yep. That entire size has been discontinued, and it wasn't made into a bigger bar like the Mint Crisp/Chips.

Comment: All the cadburys standard bars in Ireland are the 4 x 2 square shape. They are made in Dublin, rather than birmingham, and the chocolate has quite a different taste than the UK versions. The rum and raison is still alive and well in Ireland.

Comment: What's the taste like? Is it as nice as the UK ones?
Posted: 07:48 Tue 31-Jan-2006 by "jb" # permalink comment
Comment: It is way nicer. The texture is also way claggier. Irish Cadbury's is the best easily.

Comment: Where can we buy Cadbury's Gold Rum and Raisin chocolate in England? It is readily available now all over Australia and is very popular. also Why is dark chocolate only available in Supermarkets? It is never to be found in petrol stations or news agents. Cadbury's need to wake up to the call. Dark chocolate forever.

Please help this situation by providing vital infromation on the possible where abouts of this chocolate. Oh I believe they have it in Australia... they have everything, hot weather, beaches, all the good stuff and swimming pools in their back gardens!! What do we get?... NOTHING!!

Comment: Oh no, I can't believe it's been discontinued ... I just fancied a bar of Old Jamacan Rum N Raisin, so I went to google it so I could purchase a bar (I'm now in the USA, so 'going to the store to buy stuff that I fancy' is no longer an option), this was my Dad's favourite too, so whenever he'd treat himself to a bar, we would get a few pieces ... mmm, I can taste it now!
