Click pic to view comments - International sighting: Jelly Belly JBz International sighting: Jelly Belly JBz
Posted: 12:12 Thu 29-Jul-2004. Price: $5. Location: Borders Books, Union Square, San Francisco. Sub-flavours: Usual Jelly Belly flavours.
"Mike Gray" reports: Imagine a Smartie. Now imagine that it's any one of the usual weird Jelly Belly flavours (yes, *all* of them!) and it's like a whole new world of strange. As ever, some are inedible, and some are surprisingly great (the mint ones are almost as good as the late lamented Quirks that vanished from English shelves years ago) - hopefully they'll reach our shores soon.

...Despite "Mike's" promise that he'd "email photo", I eventually caved in to public pressure and went and bought a 40g box from the London Cybercandy store - only to find that my box (of approx 40) in fact doesn't seem to be "all" the flavours, just a semi-random selection of 20, with the paint-flecked colourings making it near-impossible to distinguish between the likes of "Raspberry" and "Sizzling Cinnamon", or even "Apricot" and "Top Banana". Nasty American cooking chocolate inside them, too - very much like those fake cheap Smarties sometimes sold as "sugar coated chocolate beans". Anyway, in other semi-foreign fruitiness: "James" thought we'd be interested to hear that he saw Annosh Chocolate Covered Dates With Almonds "at a Food show at Christmas and tried some samples, then my girlfriend bought some through the website for her mother and us", while "Michael Parker" claims he saw the elusive Fanta Strawberry priced at 1.25 in Tesco Ryde, declaring "It has a pleasant taste of strawberries and tastes natural. It tastes similar to Zesty Berry, but is more fruity", but sent in a pic straight off this Coca-Cola site - where, admittedly, I did learn about the (previously unsuspected) existence of China's spicy Sprite on Fire.

Comment: I've been to the Cybercandy shop, not more than three weeks ago now, and purchased a four-pack of Mountain Dew among other things. I was served by the very lovely Gigi, who I then proposed to.

Comment: I've had Fanta Strawberry, from a Somali grocers in Whitechapel, it was ages ago. It had Arabic writing all over the can. It was absolutely disgusting, far too artificial and far too sweet. 46784 0
