Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Nestle Double Cream Mini Roll/ Rolo Mini Roll Confirmed sighting: Nestle Double Cream Mini Roll/ Rolo Mini Roll
Posted: 17:35 Mon 16-Aug-2004. Price: Both 25p. Location: (Both) Home Bargains, Pontefract. Nutritional unusualness: Soya flour in the "Rolo" one.
"Phillerena" reports: Described as "A chocolate sponge roll with white chocolate and buttercream ganache filling generously covered with Nestle Double Cream milk chocolate". Compared to the Rolo Mini Roll I also had [below], this is absolutely delicious. It is creamy and has a sort of "luxury" taste to it. The Double Cream coating is not very detectable, and tastes just like any other chocolate. The roll itself is the standard mini roll sponge, but the filling itself is very sweet and creamy, and tastes lovely. I couldn't taste any white chocolate though, and am left wondering what the meaning of "ganache" is. The wrapper is in the pre Double Cream shake up style (ie, before DC was relaunched along with Double Berry etc), with the "Chocolate Matters" slogan on the side. Highly recommended, mainly because this is as cheap as any other mini roll, yet tastes like it should cost a little bit more.

...A double-helping from "Phillerena" today, who sadly then found the Rolo version something of a letdown: This one has a more attractive wrapper than the Double Cream one, but is a far inferior product. The chocolate coating is just like all standard Nestle milk chocolate (a bit dull), and the sponge itself is also like any other standard mini roll. So, the most important factor: the toffee filling. This should be the one thing to make this mini roll different from all others... yet it isn't. OK, so you can taste the toffee, but against the dry sponge, it may as well not even be there. You can taste a slight "hint" of toffee, but it is just not enough to be worthy of the name "Rolo".

Comment: Here's the meaning of ganache according to dictionary.com:

"A rich icing made of chocolate and cream heated and stirred together, used also as a filling, as for cakes or pastry." From: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=ganache

So in other words it's a fancy word for a creamy chocolate filling. It's also used as a filling for fine chocolates as well.

Comment: Not sure but I think gash is a Yorkshire saying, I have heard my grandfather use the word quite often.
