Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Golden Wonder Golden Skins Confirmed sighting: Golden Wonder Golden Skins
Posted: 19:11 Tue 17-Aug-2004. Price: 1.19/ 150g bag. Location: Sainsbury's, London NW3. Sub-flavours: Loaded Cheese, Mexican Chilli and Cheese, Pepperoni and Cheese. Nutritional unusualness: "Salt equivalent - 1.8g per 100g".
"Gizza" reports: Yum Yum! The new "Skins" are absolutely great! I managed to get hold of a few packs via a friend who works in the factory. They confirmed the product was to be launched nationwide with Sainsbury's on the 16/8/04. Big thick cut crisps loaded with taste - absolutely fantastic. Reminded me a little of Brannigans, but with different flavours. The Pepperoni were my favourite - upsetting my vegetarian girlfriend - as in fact they do contain Pepperoni powder. The Mexican Chilli and Cheese also have fantastic taste but give a strange aftertaste and very bad breath! But hey so what!

...An almost-suspiciously enthusiastic sighting here from (friend of) crisp-industry insider "Gizza", which I would have posted yesterday if I'd spotted that my local Sainsbury's had (presumably incorrectly) hidden them away in the "Organics" section. Also, here's hoping the ads will feature Silver Sun's 1997 Weezer-lite single Golden Skin (caution, lyrics site, popups may occur - you can also watch the video at the bottom of this page). Anyway, The Grocer reports that Kettle Chips are getting in on the spicy action with Sweet Chilli and Teriyaki variants (59p/ 50g, 1.45/ 150g), while Walkers are retaliating with a Great British Dinners range in September, featuring Lamb and Mint Sauce, Baked Ham and Mustard, and (of course) Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding.

Comment: These new crisps are a really great, filling snack. I got the Loaded Cheese and Chilli & Cheese varieties in Sainsbury's Plymouth on Sat 14th and both have been eaten already. They come in large 'takeaway' style bags with the side edges tucked in forming a double fold. The actual crisps remind me of the Marks and Spencers 'Flavourburst' range with loads of flavour powder and flecks of chilli being found on both sides of the crisp.

In other crisp news, Hyper Value stores are now selling at 10p per bag standard size Golden Wonder crisps in Spring Onion flavour, and their special St George flag packets in Ready Salted, Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar flavours. Also spotted in the cheapo stores recently have been the little packs of purple and pink Original flavour Pringles, and full size tubes in Cream Cheese flavour. And Waitrose has had both new flavours of Kettle Chips for the last couple of weeks, with the Sweet Chilli [look for the red/green packets] being my favourite.

For real flavour connoisseurs though, so far this year the best new flavours sampled are the Jonathan Crisp Horseradish flavour and Burts Crisps Firecracker Lobster flavour.

Comment: Can you taste the cheese in them? That's what put me off buying them.

Comment: curiously, for a product that makes such a virtue of its cheesiness, I could only taste the pepperoni in mine. still, your mileage/ cheese sensitivity may vary...

Comment: Golden Skins are gorgeous. Most "posh" crisps inexplicably go for a greasy, hard, brittle texture compared to normal ones, but these are beautiful - crunchy but somehow "soft" at the same time. Why can't all crisps be made like this, instead of just these middle-class Independent-reading nancy flavours in ten-gallon bags? I'd pay good money for an ordinary packet of salt'n'vinegar or pickled onion made this way.

Comment: yeah, I noticed they were a bit "soft" (especially compared to Kettle Chips, which are like chewing broken CD cases), but I thought it might be something to do with the humid weather?

Comment: I got a bag of japanese teriyaki kettle chips from the cullens on edgeware road last week and they are the usual kettle-con. they taste exactly like bog-standard barbecue crisps. As always, it was like eating rzor blades. Why do I keep buying kettlers? I think I like the idea of hand-cooked, gourmet crisps far more than the actual product, which mings.

Comment: These Golden Skins are UNBELIEVABLE. I had the pepperoni and cheese flavour and they are without doubt the best crisps I have ever eaten. I don't even like crisps! But these are fantastic. Buy buy buy!

Comment: Golden Skins rock!!! Proven by the fact that every time I have been in Sainsbury's since they have been selling them, there's usually only a few packets of one flavour left!!! Keep 'em coming Golden Wonder, my purchases alone should keep you in business...!
