Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Doritos Tandoori Sizzler flavour Confirmed sighting: Doritos Tandoori Sizzler flavour
Posted: 13:08 Thu 19-Aug-2004. Price: sub-50p I think. Location: Sheffield. Nutritional unusualness: "Extreme crunch and flavour overload".
As "HotPhil" posts on his "blog": Another new Dorito flavour - if I recall correctly, when Doritos first launched they came in three varities - "Cool" (revolting), Cheese (revolting) and Barbecue Beef (ace). They stopped doing the beef variety a while back. A chilli flavour was brought in which kind of redressed the balance, but not much. Now we find ourselves with Tandoori Sizzler to boot. Who'd have thought it - Mexican snacks with Indian flavour? Genius? Well, no actually. They just don't smell or taste of anything remotely Indian, certainly not of anything cooked in a tandoor. Quite edible though, and worth buying for a bit of a change.

...Now, I'm no expert, but I got distinct inklings of "spicy", "tomato" and "Monster Munch" when I tried these - as "HotPhil" implies, it's not "Tandoori Chicken" or anything, just the generic flavour of "Tandoori Extreme". In other savoury salutations - "Cameron" paid 69p for a variety pack of Ringos in Sainsbury's, Nine Elms, chortling: They're back, the staple of my school packed lunches in the '80s!, while The Grocer's pages have been packed with crispy strangeness recently, from Walkers rebranding Spudz as Snack-a-Jacks Mini Bites (49p/ 28g, 1.29/ 120g) to Jacob's launch of Thai Bites Fusions (39p/ 30g, 1.45/ 150g).

Comment: did anyone else notice the "Less than 10% fat free!" flashing notice on the walkers website of these "new" mini bites (bottom left hand corner). interesting, they seem a bit too eager to tell people how "healthy" these are...

Comment: well spotted K, though thinking about it, doesn't "less than 10% fat free" mean that at least 90% of the product is actually fat?

Comment: How anyone can eat Doritos after that god awful advert with Vernon Kaye in it beats me.

Comment: Exactly - Surely if (as the theory goes) we are supposed to helplessy buy lots of the product if we like vernon, then surely we should actually STOP buying the product if we hate the lanky smug grinning twuntfull of hair and teeth.

Kinda like barclays(?) in the 80's(?) with those godawful "its a bit like a photocopier, except the paper's more expensive" ads - If i'd been banking with them at the time i'd have made a point of closing my account.

Yay for the negative effects of advertising - boycott those feckers for filling our ad-breaks with putrid garbage!

Comment: If we all boycott products with bad adverts, in the long run we'll end up with better TV.

Comment: On a recent holiday in Crete, I bought a packet of TUC bacon flavoured biscuits in a supermarket and they were lovely but I can't find them here in Scotland. Anyone know if they are marketed here or are they only on sale abroad ? The company is owned by Danone but their website is not very helpful.

Comment: It seems that tandoori doritos' North American run is limited to Canada, and even there I can only reliably find them in Shopper's Drug Marts for some reason... It's a pity, I've come to rather like them. They don't taste tandoori-ey, per se, but do taste Indian in a spicy cumin/coriander sort of way. Much better than the disgusting Nacho flavored kind >.<
