Click pic to view comments - International sighting: Nestle Mint Slice Bites International sighting: Nestle Mint Slice Bites
Posted: 19:05 Mon 23-Aug-2004. Price: I don't know - my girlfriend bought them. Location: Melbourne, Australia. Sub-flavours: All the other "Bites". Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Adrian" reports: Arnott's Mint Slices (as reviewed on NiceCupOfTeaEtc) are a very popular biscuit here in Oz, so I was quite surprised when my girlfriend handed me a packet of these. At first I thought it was just another case of taking a product and repurposing it, but then I realised it looks a like a case of Nestle taking someone else's product and repurposing it - these small bites of chocolate and mint and biscuit goodness taste almost exactly like Arnott's Mint Slices, but aren't! This is known in the legal trade as "passing off" [allegedly - Ed.] Nestle have done a very good job imitating the Arnott's original. They taste good. I checked with a co-worker - she thought they taste exactly like the Arnott's biscuit. So I'm a bit torn - I like them, but I don't know if I should support Nestle's attempt to steal Arnott's thunder.

..."Adrian" returns with a mouthful of antipodean controversy here - now I'm no lawyer (evidently), but might this be a case of a product whose name is just too general to be successfully trademarked (as happened here in the UK with, off the top of my head, "Bran Flakes", "Corn Flakes" and "Mini Eggs"?) And in other semi-international niceties: "Chester Copperpot" says he saw some UK version of Nestle Editions - Kit Kat Caramel in Asda Cardiff for 1.24 for a pack of 3, but was unable to bring himself to buy any as he's "never been a big fan of KitKat since they changed the chocolate to a cheaper version".

Comment: duh, what was I thinking - this is clearly an early sighting of the "Rich Golden Caramel" KitKat [Limited] Edition, due in September and previously mentioned here: http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0406251321sbc#upcoming

Comment: Why, why do the antipodeans get so many tasty foodstuffs that we will never see? Jaffa Cakes is another non-trademarked name...
