Click pic to view comments - Semi-international sighting: Bassett's Sour Wine Gums Semi-international sighting: Bassett's Sour Wine Gums
Posted: 17:36 Wed 25-Aug-2004. Price: 1/ 400g bag. Location: Farmfoods, Filton. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: These are billed as "new", but seem to actually be just a repackaged version of something I was buying at the same store over a year ago, and which has been sadly missed. Though the packaging, including the "story of Bassett's" blurb, is almost all in English, these are a product of Cadbury Nederland, and as far as I know are not on general UK release (which would also explain the bargain price). So get down to your local Farmfoods, because these are the world's finest winegums, streets ahead of the Maynards version which dominates the UK. Even the sour coating is nicer than the one on Maynards Sours (though if your branch has the non-sour version which the same freezer chain also used to sell, get those instead). Once again, Farmfoods proves itself the snack-lover's Mecca.

...This sighting from "Stuart" also suggests a possible explanation for some of the inexplicable denials issued by confectionery companies - exotic brands spotted here have often been illicitly imported (via the Delboy-esque "grey" market), meaning that official UK outlets won't know about them. Either that, or they've been instructed to disavow all knowledge of these rogue actions, "Mission: Impossible"-style. Anyway, in other fruity frolics: Muller have added Morello Cherry and Apple Strudel variants to their Amore Luxury Yogurt range, and Wrigleys are producing a Strawberry version of Juicy Fruit (due in September for 28p/ packet, tasting of "strawberry, apple and pear").

Comment: i picked up some strawberry wrigley's extra when i was in madrid and it's delicious (the tropical fruits one is good too). interesting the picture shows jucy fruit as a pellet (unless i've missed something not being a sugar-gum afficionado)...

Comment: yeah you're right "charl" - I guess the Spanish one comes in strips? In the US, you can buy Wrigleys Extras in strip form too...

Comment: Strappleberry has been out here for a while in Oz - I tried it - and I think it's quite good. It comes in pellet form too. Maybe pellets are a Commonwealth thing? (Supposition completely unsupported by evidence of any kind)...

Comment: yeah someone sent in a slightly sketchy sighting of "Assorted" fruity Toffos from Milton Keynes - I must admit I was unaware that they'd ever gone away?

Comment: Assorted Toffos have never gone anywhere. It's the mint ones that are a bugger to find.

Comment: They used to be sold in tubes in most newsagents/sweet shops, but I haven't seen any for ages now. I suppose it depends on where you are.

Comment: Strappleberry has been consumed. It tastes quite nice at first but becomes bitter and tough after not very long. They really need to sort out their chewing gum base.
