Confirmed sighting: Snack-a-Jacks Mini Bites
Posted: 17:01 Fri 08-Oct-2004. Price: About 60p/ 28g bag. Location: Various newsagents, North London. Sub-flavours: Mature Cheddar and Red Onion, Sour Cream and Sweet Chilli, Tangy Tomato and Red Pepper. Nutritional unusualness: What the Walkers site tantalisingly describes as "Real Food Flavours".
Snackspot
reports: I've (at last!) tracked down all three flavours of this new Snack-a-Jacks form factor, and am pleased to report that they definitely get the thumbs-up from me. Most of my comments regarding Snack-a-Jack Spudz ("Imagine a madman's ultra-futuristic attempt to create KP Skips from entirely synthetic ingredients...") still apply, but only the Sour Cream and Chilli flavour has survived from the original lineup, while the two new ones more than make up for the absence of the inventive - perhaps too inventive? - "Smoked Bacon and cheese" and "Oriental barbecue". You know it pains me to praise another PepsiCo product, but complete with the authentic taste of "real food", these are truly the crisps of the future!
...I don't think anyone else is going to report these in, so I'll just mention that Jacob's Thai Bites Fusions were a bit of a potato/ rice-cracker hybrid disappointment (though I've only tried the Thai Red Curry and Coriander variety - your mileage may vary). And still they come, with The Grocer
reporting that
advertising is about to commence for Ryvita Minis (in Mature Cheddar and Onion, Tomato Salsa, Cream Cheese and Chive, or Garlic and Herb), while
Weight Watchers are wielding their own Low Fat Rice Sticks (in Salt and Vinegar, Thai Sweet Chilli, Mediterranean Tomato), pioneeringly "cooked in air rather than in oil".

Comment: Looking at that Walkers site - it proudly describes Snack a Jack mini bites as "Less than 10% Fat Free"...is that a good thing?

Comment: Well, "less that 10% fat free" would imply that 10 % or less of the product has no fat in it. Which means that 90% or more of the product by deduction has fat in it. Therefore you might as well just eat rice flavoured lard.
Maybe, its a new line in anti diet foods, for people that dare to be different (or hugely obese) whichever is easier.

Comment: Tried the Garlic & Herb Ryvita Minis. I've never been a Ryvita fan, and that's still the case. (contains Trehalose)

Comment: hey Lee thought I might see you at dorkbot last week but Gav said you had a dental emergency - hope it's better now + were the (alarmingly chewy?) Ryvita Minis to blame?

Comment: Fine thanks, Snackspot. Ryvita not to blame - more like several decades of reckless snack adventuring. (BTW I have a fricking email address, you know.)

Comment: Yummy - so much nicer than the large SaJs. I love the chilli flavour. Sadly they're not as low in fat as you'd expect from a rice cake but still gorgeous and less fatty than most crisps.

Comment: Does anyone know if plain (salted) snack-a-jacks are still available?
Haven't been able to find them for ages...
