Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Ovaltine/ Novartis Options Banoffee Limited Edition Confirmed sighting: Ovaltine/ Novartis Options Banoffee Limited Edition
Posted: 22:19 Thu 04-Nov-2004. Price: £1.58p (though I used a "£1 off" voucher). Location: Asda, Monks Cross Shopping Park, York. Sub-flavours: Many. Nutritional unusualness: Banoffee flavour hot drink with no traces of hot chocolate.
"Phillerena" reports: If there can be a Banoffee fizzy drink then why not a Banoffee hot drink? Well, here it is. Another Limited Edition version of Options, this is not actually hot chocolate. They have simply called it "Instant Hot Drink". Options are known for their endless flavours of hot chocolate (recent ones were Spiced Ginger, Cinammon, and Vanilla), which I presume they do to entice slimmers into buying these low-fat hot chocolate drinks. When you open the jar you find a whitish coloured powder that smells rather sweet and chemically. Once made, it tastes similar to the Toffee flavour Options, although a lot sweeter and with a distinct Banoffee taste. It's rather sickly, but just about tolerable. You have to use more powder than they tell you to though otherwise this becomes a very watery affair. Worth a try if you're slimming, as it's only 47 calories per cup and the range of Options flavours is almost as never-ending as the recent Kit Kat madness. The main ingredients are whey powder and dried skimmed milk, but it does contain natural banana flavour (oh, and sweeteners).

..."Phillerena" here fills in a sighting of a product I've been looking for since February - though Starbucks are hardly proving any more imaginative in their choice of winter warmers this Christmas, and are merely relaunching last year's Chocolate Mint Bliss, Eggnog and Gingerbread Lattes.

Comment: Options are the only low-cal sweet things which are actually nice, and their policy of retailing in skint-friendly 2 serving packs is commendable - if I remember rightly they started this trend in the hot drinks world.

Comment: I certainly prefer them over Cadbury Highlights. I did see the Spiced Ginger one in Tesco once but didn't buy it. They are selling the double sachets of the various Options flavours in Home Bargains for something like 15p at the moment.

Comment: I like the single serving sachets, they are the perfect amount. but I do add milk to them to make them creamier. I love the mint one!

Comment: Was in Tesco today and found the new Hazelnut flavour one in sachet form. Haven't tried it yet though.

Comment: I tried toffee, vanilla, banana, hazelnut, and mint this week, in the Tesco 5 for a quid offer.

Mint and Vanilla are ok, toffee like dishwater, and the hazelnut is evil. Horrible taste stayed with me all day long.

Comment: Yes the hazelnut was yukky. Not as good as the Galaxy Hazelnut hot choccy drink. They used to do a Galaxy hot choc where you added powder to hot milk before they brought out the ones where you add water. It was a lot better tasting than the watery ones.

Comment: HELP ... Does anyone know about the RUM flavour ????

O have been asked to find some!!

Comment: Oooh will look out for it but haven't seen it. Options flavours are hard to track down. I still have a jar of Spiced Ginger one left...the yukkiest hot chocolate I've ever tasted.

Comment: You can get a Rum and Raisin flavour from Tesco. I wish options would bring out the Orange one in a jar- i love it (2nd fave after the mint one)

Comment: I'm susrprised they still haven't done a strawberry flavour yet.

Comment: I second the yukky spiced ginger comment. I too was scammed into it. Tell a lie, it was more that I liked the IDEA of spiced ginger hot chocolate. It was... it still is, nasty stuff.

Comment: It's all about the 'TEMPTING TOFFEE' flavour but why do they only do them in sachets???? Please bring it out in a jar, all those sachets keep slipping through the Asda trolley holes!

Comment: They have a new line of jars out now, slimline designs. In mint, orange, belgian choc and I believe, white choc flavours only.

Comment: Spiced Ginger is one of my favourite flavours! I logged onto site in an attempt to find more! Cant find an actual website for ovaltine options. I never found Spiced Ginger in my local Tesco but travelled miles to nearest Asda. other favourite is Choca Mocha, also a limited edition, which you have to grab when you can.

Comment: I was initially delighted to taste the Fudge edition of Cadbury Highlights, but upon reading the list of ingredients I was appalled to find that the product contained Hydrogenated Vegetable Fat, at which point I consigned the container and its contents to the waste bin. For anyone that is not aquainted with the dangers of Trans fats the following should be found of interest; “Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils - the main dietary source of Trans fats - are very useful to the food industry. They are cheap; they have neutral flavour; they melt in the mouth, like butter; and they have very long shelf lives, which they confer to the products that contain them. Unlike other unsaturated oils and fats which go rancid over time, hydrogenated fats are highly resistant to oxidation and rancidity. Trans fats are therefore found in thousands of everyday food products, such as margarine, cakes, pies, biscuits, some vegetable oils, cheap chocolate, other confectionery and ice cream, and most ready-made meals - and that's without starting on fast food. As for the fact that Trans fats are seriously bad for us, causing premature death on a massive scale, the food industry just doesn't care. I only know of one other industry that treats its customers with the same callous disregard, knowingly selling them products that will lead to unnecessary illness and premature death - the tobacco industry.”

Comment: I totally agree with Kipco's comments particularly regarding hydrogenated oils. Whoever came up with that one! I am also appalled that Cadbury puts "a sweet poison" in their drinks "ie Highlights" in the form of phenylalanine. Oh for a return to natural foods instead of this cheap "manufactured garbage" which is surreptitiously killing the nation prematurely.

Comment: Turkish delight flavour used to be a perminent one, apparently is didnt sell as well as they thought, so they recently decided to only sell it in the limited edition range- it now won't be out again until Feb next year!!! I called to find this out-there is a phone number on the back of their products, please people- call them and say how great this flavour is- I love it, and i can't find any stock left anywhere :-( I hate all hot chocs- they all taste the same to me, watery, pastey, the other flavours are sickly- this one tastes just like the chocolate bar & doesnt make me feel sick, plus its so low in cals- anyhow, I love it! 75036 0 01

Comment: I was at a health farm the other day and was absolutely apalled that they would try and serve me Cadbury's options with Hydrogenated fat in it. Not only is this fat bad for your body, your brain thinks it is a fatty acid and laps it up - but it does not conduct as well as proper fatty acid. You can guess what that means (unless you've had too many "options" that is....) We need to vote with our feet girls n guys...:-)

Comment: I Have Looked Everywhere For The Flavours; Caribbean Coconut & Go Bananas. I Have Now Just Found Out That They Are Limited Editions. If They Weren`t Limited Editions But Proper Flavours Availible Any Time Then You Would Probablly Find Them Very Popular & Make Alot Of Money Out Of Them. Alot Of People Want To Try Those Flavours & Would Love Them To Be Availible All The Time Instead Of Just Limited Edition. Ty.

Comment: I was SHOCKED also to find that there is no web site for such a great product. I LOVE coconut with a passion and thought it would be great to try the coconut options but now it is hinted that it will only be out as limited edition, how rude they are showing the advert all the time and making me pine for such a scrummy taste every time i watch it. Think i'd better stock up when it does come out again or get onto bounty and beg them to produce some for me. If anyone finds some before april please let us all know. thanx.
