Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Kettle Chips Mature Brie and Cranberry Confirmed sighting: Kettle Chips Mature Brie and Cranberry
Posted: 20:17 Wed 05-Jan-2005. Price: (reduced to) 64p/ 150g bag. Location: Sainsbury's, North London. Sub-flavours: Mature Cheddar and Burgundy, Roquefort and French Onion (not tested). Nutritional unusualness: "Special Potatoes", cooked in sunflower oil, 0.4g sodium per 50g serving = 1.0g "equivalent as salt".
Snackspot reports: No sign of the others, but the reduced price implies this wasn't the runaway Christmas success someone thought it might be. The packet promises "The strength of real Brie, the tang of cranberry, with a touch of sea salt and toasted onion", but the crisps deliver... a slightly cheesy, surprisingly salty Kettle Chip with a disturbingly fruity aftertaste, presumably due to the tiny red "cranberry flakes" sticking all over them. They do leave your fingers covered in quite an entertaining powdery residue, but you could achieve almost exactly the same effect by taking alternate mouthfuls of jam sandwich while eating a packet of Wotsits.

...In other savoury special editions, vegetarian "Charlie" found herself unable to try Walkers Turkey and Paxo Stuffing Flavour because, she alleges, they "contain animal fat (unlike many other meat flavoured crisps)", but nevertheless enthusiastically announced that they "smell disgusting - just another excuse for Walkers taking up space on shelves and not allowing consumers choices" - though the company is doing its bit in other ways, by recalling their Ready Salted French Fries, apparently because "as many as 11,000 packs contain cheese and onion flavoured snacks" instead.

Comment: These have been lurking in Jackson's stores in York for a while. I reckon they're superb, although they've got that kind of harsh cheese dust that gives you a sore throat if you stop eating them, thus encouraging further munch.

On a tangent, Jackson's are currently prominently stocking "Potato Heads" - opaque packet with a picture of Mr Potato Head on the packaging, along with what looked like a fairly normal ridged crisp (think McCoys, but thinner). I think it was Golden Wonder, but it was probably part of the Walkers hegemony. Will confirm tonight.

Comment: I bought a pack of Roquefort and French Onion kettle crisps before Christmas at Sainsburys (Luton), but haven't had time to eat them yet. The Walkers Paxo crisps taste very much like the Roast chicken flavour, but with a sagelike tang. And very nice they are too.

Comment: Don't forget who saw them first;)

If I'm not mistaken, don't the Paxo crisps come around every Christmas?

Comment: I was a big fan of the wonderfully antisocial garlic and rosemary Kettle Chips, but can't find them anywhere anymore. Have they stopped doing them? Anyone seen them recently? 17288 6
