Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Rowntree's Zanies/ Sour Spiders/ Fruity Frogs/ Wiggly Worms Confirmed sighting: Rowntree's Zanies/ Sour Spiders/ Fruity Frogs/ Wiggly Worms
Posted: 10:32 Thu 13-Jan-2005. Price: 1 (all info refers to Zanies). Location: Pound Shop, Selby. Sub-flavours: I've seen a Zanies marshmallow version in Home Bargains. Nutritional unusualness: "May contain traces of milk".
"Phillerena" reports: These seem to be a Nestle Rowntree version of Starburst. The 200g box contains individually wrapped fruit chews that come in 3 colours - pink, yellow and orange. They don't taste half as good as Starburst as they're not as juicy or soft to eat. Also I note that the Rowntree logo isn't like the regular one and the packaging is very cheap looking.

...Once again, I know very little about these, except they're in addition to the Rowntrees Sour Spiders/ Fruity Frogs/ Wiggly Worms which "Stuart Campbell" was unable to provide an in-focus photo of (after finding them in Bath), but described as follows: Fairly standard variants (ordinary, sour-coated etc) on the fairly standard American-style "gummy" sweet that's been making unwelcome inroads this side of the Atlantic, but these were something of a pleasant surprise, offering a much fruitier, less artificial flavour than most sweets of the ilk. They're still not a patch on traditional British-style gums like Fruit Gums or Sports Mixtures, and you don't get many in a 20p packet (barely a dozen in the case of Sour Spiders), but they're not bad and, in a bucking of another unwelcome recentish tradition, the green ones actually appear to be lime flavour - not bloody apple, long regarded by British children as the "punishment fruit". Snack Points: 6/10.

Comment: Warning! Don't buy the Xtra [sic] Sour Spiders - they are not sour in the slightest, just sickly fruit sweets. I have written to complain about the lies in the name and hope I get satisfaction or the Trades Descriptions people will have to be brought in to the matter. 69638 5 43
